Figure News: Hobby Japan January 2008 leftovers

We’ve already scooped the bulk of what was new in this month’s issue of Hobby Japan, but after getting my hands on an actual copy of the magazine last night I noticed a few other odds and ends that might be of interest. Includes updates from Witchblade, Kimikiss, Code Geass, Queen’s Blade, Bible Black, and Nitro+ character designer Niθ; details below:

Figure News: Dengeki 15th Anniversary figure fallout

Publishing company Mediaworks (parent of the Dengeki magazine lines) is holding a festival to mark the brand’s 15th anniversary this weekend at Makuhari Messe in Tokyo, and several figure makers were there to hawk their wares and unveil a few new items in the process. Word is still coming in from the event hall floor, but what we know at present is shown below:

Figure News: Kotobukiya’s Katsuragi Misato, Komaki Ikuno PVCs up for preorder

Kotobukiya has updated its official release info page with data on two new PVC releases coming down the pipe in March 2008, and both are now up for preorder at Hobby Stock: first is Evangelion‘s Katsuragi Misato (scooped here), clocking in at 1/6 scale and 7,140 yen retail. Second is Komaki Ikuno from To Heart 2, who is 1/8 scale and comes with a functional wheelchair at 6,090 yen retail. Both have charm points to recommend them, Misato for being Misato and generally underserved when it comes to figures, and Ikuno for her wheelchair (which is sort of sad, but you know that thing is going to be used in all sorts of creative ways). High resolution galleries of both below:

Figure Review: Chrono Gate’s Mylene Hoffman PVC from 009-1

There’s a limit to the amount of skin you can show on a figure and still classify it as non-ero, and Chrono Gate’s Mylene is just about at that limit. This is what initially drew me to the kit, and my appreciation of her original design and affinity for the 009-1 anime sealed the deal. Were these reasons enough to justify the purchase? I’m not entirely sure, but maybe you’ll have a more concrete opinion…

Figure Review: Kotobukiya’s Clalaclan Philias PVC from Shining Wind

As a casual fan of artist Taka Tony’s work I’ve been keeping an eye on the flood of figures from the Shining game series that have seen release over the past couple of years, but when this Clalaclan was announced she was the first that really grabbed my whole attention. Sure the pointy tiara puts the Statue of Liberty to shame, and her hair looks like the pelt of some ancient Roman lion as envisioned by a monk calligrapher in the Dark Ages, but the winsome Tony face and the ample expanse of bosom put to rest all doubts in my mind – this was a figure that must be acquired, and the finished product is even better than I had hoped. Read on for the highly photogenic details:

[ERO] Figure News: Kotobukiya’s Clalaclan is castoffable, but…

A courageous individual at 2chan’s mokeura board went ahead and did what was inevitable given the inviting seams around Clalaclan‘s chest region, forcibly separating the front of her dress from what lies beneath. As expected it is a process that results in some damage to the kit, and does not yield a finished product; thus it is an operation only recommended for those willing to void the warranty and do some experimental reconstructive surgery (or be left with a pair of vaguely defined and vaguely unsatisfying bosoms staring you in the face). Regardless of the lack of post-op articulation this is an amazing kit that I’d recommend to anyone who can still find her available – a rare home run from Kotobukiya that is rapidly becoming rarer. I wish they made them all like this… castoff pictures below:

Figure News: preorder and limited edition miscellany

A few miscellaneous items now in preorder: Resinya’s Kushieda Minori from Toradora! (January release), Aizu Project’s Ryomou Shimei (gosurori ver.) cold cast from Ikkitousen (February release), Beat’s original Amaha Collection Wildcat Anna (December release), and Chrono Gate’s Murata Yukari from Rocket Girls (March release). In limited edition news, a Nitro+ online shop limited Kuro no Franco will be released with additional scarf, different facial expression and different colored underwear; a limited edition pink Konomi (maid ver.) is coming from Kotobukiya shops, and an Amiami-limited Wildcat Anna will be available in silver. Also in from Kotobukiya via Akiba Hobby is word that we’ll be seeing a Shining Wind Kureha from them sometime next year. (no more)

Figure News: Kotobukiya preorder blitz includes DOAX2, Another Days, Shana, Clannad, D.C.S.S.

Figure News: 2007 Plamo / Radicon Show update

Moeyo has posted further details regarding the bishoujo figures on display at the 2007 Plastic Model and Radicon Show currently happening at Makuhari Messe in Tokyo. A quick roundup: Yamashita Shunya‘s Petra is coming from Aoshima‘s Funny Knights line in February of ’08, and appears at least partially castoffable. The Range Murata-designed Character Design Bible vol. 03 Cover Girl PVC is coming from Beagle on May 1st, 2008 at 7,140 yen retail. Kotobukiya’s Lei Fang is coming in January at 1/6 scale and 8,190 yen retail, in two versions: regular and Tecmo shop limited. Both come with interchangeable swimsuit parts. Kotobukiya’s To Heart 2 Another Days Yamada Michiru is coming in January at 4,725 yen, along with their Another Days Konomi (maid ver.) at 5,040 yen. (no more)

Figure News: scoops from the 2007 Plastic Model / Radicon Show

The 47th annual Plastic Model / Radicon Show is happening this weekend, and Moeyo! Akibajin Blog was there yesterday to check it out. While mostly devoted to plastic models (mecha and vehicles) and radio controlled devices (hence the name), bishoujo figures made a fair showing as well; the following can be deduced from Moeyo’s initial coverage:

[ERO] Figure News: Kotobukiya’s Yamashita Shunya-designed Shouko-san PVC is castoffable

Feeling like a broken record here… Once again we turn to Moeyo! Akibajin blog for the inside scoop: according to their coverage, not only is the Kotobukiya shop limited, Yamashita Shunya designed Shouko-san‘s top removable but this is the first time in Kotobukiya’s history that they’ve fully painted everything underneath. Though typical Moeyo censorship prevents us from determining this for ourselves there’s no reason to disbelieve the assertion, and this may make what was otherwise a rather bland entry into Kotobukiya’s Shunya series rather more desirable (though not quite enough for me to justify an order at 7,350 yen, especially given the awkward-looking castoff). Regardless, here’s hoping this trend continues with future figures in the Yamashita line! (no more)

Figure News: Evangelion’s Katsuragi Misato coming in PVC from Kotobukiya

Great news today for the legions of Misato fans out there (and for those of us sick and tired of endless parades of Rei and Asuka): Kotobukiya has announced on their official blog that a PVC of Misato is currently in production! No details regarding price or release date are yet forthcoming, but given that they’re only showing us an unpainted resin prototype we may end up seeing her street around the time the next Eva movie hits theaters.
