Wonder Festival tomorrow! (today)

Tomorrow (later today, as I’m posting this early Sunday morning) is Wonder Festival 2008 Summer, and I regret to say that for the first time in the past few years I won’t be in attendance. My goal of resuming regular updates has obviously not come to fruition as hoped, so to keep people from worrying that I’ve dropped off the face of the planet I’ll state that for the time being there will not be regular updates here at HD until I can be sure I have the drive to resume them in a disciplined way. I’d like to apologize to everyone who’s visited in the expectation of new content, and I assure you that the site is not abandoned, and I plan to continue updating in the future – just when and how I’m not quite sure at this point, but the updates will come.

If you’ve left a comment or sent an email to me I’ll be sorting through those as well, when I’m able – otherwise, I can be reached most reliably on IRC during the week at #naisho on, if you’d like to chat.

I’ll be keeping an eye on Wonder Festival news and try bring up some of the most relevant material here, over the next week, but otherwise it looks like I’ll be sitting this one out.

Wonder Festival 2008 Winter: industry wrapup

We wrap up our coverage of Wonder Festival 2008 Winter (for real, this time) with a look at the industry items that fell through the cracks in our earlier reporting. This primarily consists of offerings on display at the Yamato and Happinet booths, but also contains a look at Organic’s Tama-chan from Bamboo Blade and the as-yet unsubstantiated rumor of an Erect Sawaru-designed figure from Solid Theater. Details follow:

Event Report: Wonder Festival 2008 Winter

The following is a quasi-chronological look at the events of February 24th, 2008, and one person’s trip to Japan’s biannual hobby mecca Wonder Festival. In addition to boring personal anecdotes it contains information of a potentially useful nature – if you’ve been wondering when the next Wonder Festival is, what happened to Eropon, why there was a veritable army of Yoko kits for sale, what’s up with Organic, or who translated the text on the warning label of that Mr. Simple Mask for Paint you just bought – well, you’ve come to the right place!

Wonder Festival 2008 Winter: [ERO] garage kits

Our look at the garage kits on display at Wonder Festival 2008 Winter concludes in earnest with a look at many of the adult-themed kits that were on display, from an amnesiac Viletta from Code Geass to a sculptural depiction of The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife, to several very attractive Kanu Unchous, an irresponsibly proportioned Uesugi Kenshin and Yamamoto Isoroku, and things far more outlandish – not a post for those at work, under legal age, or not wanting to see some pretty bizarre (and yet strangely hypnotic) pieces of sculpted plastic.

Wonder Festival 2008 Winter: garage kits galore, part II

We round up our look at the garage kits of Wonder Festival 2008 Winter in this second part of our coverage, starting off in miko paradise before moving through an ice dancing festival, a parade of who’s who in 2007 anime, a brace of truly delicious Aegises, a 1/1 scale robotic maid, Yotsuba in a diving suit, and end with a visit to Vispo, Atomic Bom and Bubba of Saikoro Caramel. If you’d like to leave a comment, please do so here. If you’re wondering where all the ero kits are, they’re coming soon…

Wonder Festival 2008 Winter: garage kits galore, part I

Due to the high volume of images in this post it’s been divided into two, with comments enabled on this post and disabled on the second. The first half of our magical mystery tour through the garage kits of Wonder Festival 2008 Winter begins in the land of BOME, traverses through the jungle of Paper Moon lifesize dolls, through the realm of Kill Time Communication, into the trenches of Lucky Star, Evagelion, Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, Haruhi, and more. The images are presented in the (random) order I took them, and all items here were sold as one day, limited license, unpainted, unassembled resin kits. Let the journey begin!

Wonder Festival 2008 Winter: industry news (updated)

Why put out Wonder Festival industry news in installments when you can do it all at once? This is the question we attempt to answer in this post, bringing scoops from (in alphabetical order): Alter, Amie Gran, Cafe Reo, CM’s, Daiki Kougyou, First Class, Goodsmile / Max Factory, Griffon, Hobby Stock, Konami, Kotobukiya, Lilics, Megahouse, Movic, Orchid Seed, Organic, Piccolo, Revoltech, Solid Theater, Toranoana, Toy’sworks, and Volks. This post will initially be pretty barebones, with nothing but a bunch of (exceedingly crappy) pictures, but it will be continually fleshed out with concrete information over the next day or so, so feel free to check back if you’re so inclined. Update: Post now includes basic information on all of the new kits announced from the makers we covered! Further updates to be posted as the news trickles in.

Wonder Festival 2008 Winter: garage kits at a glance

I made it back safely from Wonder Festival this evening loaded with well over 1,000 pictures and a whole bunch of delicious, nutritious figure scoopage information (it’s like roughage for the figure colon, or something). First up is a preview look at the garage kit side of things, where I spent most of my shooting this afternoon – lots of lovely kits on offer, as you’ll see. More WF news coming very soon, so stay tuned!

pre-WF figure news roundup (updated)

The last few tidbits of news before Wonder Festival are trickling in, including previews of some Shining-series game kits on display, Yoshizawa Mitsumasa’s Cammy garage kit, a new preorder up for a very nipply Toyonaka Haruna from Mizuiro Splash, and reissue announcements from Kotobukiya for their Clalaclan and Konomi (frill bikini ver.) PVCs. Update: now with news on First Class’s WF lineup, as well as a look at the setup process for Goodsmile’s WONDERFUL HOBBY LIFE FOR YOU stage.

Even more figure news

We round out tonight’s journey through the figure world with looks at Wonder Festival previews from several companies, including Wave, Piccolo, Alpha Omega, Cafe Reo, and Resinya. Also: a small PVC Spica update, speculation on the future of the Revoltech action figure lines, a look at all three completed Kodomo no Jikan Play Stationery, a new Nendoroid announcement, a comparison of the disembodied hands of Figma Haruhi and Konata, and a figure that smells of strawberries.

Why no Miku at Wonder Festival? Zepy explains

Zepy over at Canned Dogs has posted with the news that due to a change in licensing requirements, dealers planning to sell Hatsune Miku kits at Wonder Festival 2008 Winter have run into trouble, with their applications either being rejected or having responses so delayed as to make kit production impossible. This jives with what our survey of the event offerings shows – not a single Miku kit in evidence from any of the major sculpting circles (those with online presences, at least), which contrasts sharply with the bonanza of Miku offerings at WHF Ariake 17. Thus far the only Miku kit to be officially announced (that I’m aware of) is the one coming from Volks, who have a professional organization robust enough to handle the demanding requirements of the new system. The merits of such requirements can be debated, but the strong anti-derivative stand on the part of the Vocaloid IP is certainly a trend to watch. (no more)

Wonder Festival news, February 20-21

More news from the pre-Wonder Festival prep room this evening, coming in from all sides as vendors make their last few bids to build hype prior to the event on Sunday. Griffon and R-Line both represent with color versions of the resin kits they’ll be selling, while Kaiyodo chimes in with a Revoltech teaser and Yamato lays down their display item list. Cospa redefines the meaning of the “Polo” shirt, Daiki coughs up a riskier version of their Kenshi-san PVC – and Inoue Takuya draws Al Ajif? … yeah, I didn’t know that was possible either. Read on for details:

Figure News: Orchid Seed’s resin Kanu and Mizuho in color

We reported almost a month ago when Orchid Seed updated their official site with images of the two resin kits they would be bringing to sell at Wonder Festival 2008 Winter on February 24th, and yesterday evening they updated the product entries for both their Kanu Unchou (bikini ver.) kit from Ikkitousen and their Kazami Mizuho kit from Onegai Teacher with colored versions of the kits. Both are looking great, I must say – with her Ishiyama Satoshi sculpt the Kanu was perhaps a given (castoff now confirmed!), but it’s nice to see Mizuho looking true to her original design illustration as well. Note that while both kits will only be available in resin form at Wonder Festival, every single figure Orchid has ever sold as an “event exclusive” has eventually come out in PVC. Orchid’s galleries reproduced below:

Wonder Festival 2008 Winter garage kit preview

In which the good, the better, and the best of the garage kit world are on display in various stages of completion at sculptor sites around the ‘net as they exert a last heroic effort to put the finishing touches on items going up for sale this Sunday at Wonder Festival 2008 Winter. This list isn’t totally comprehensive, but should serve as a nice appetizer for things to come…

Figure News: February 19th roundup

In today’s figure news: Goodsmile’s recently announced Nanoha PVC goes up for preorder, preorders are also up for Yamato’s Dynamite Keikaku Kanu (alternate color version) – who comes with spiky balls, Toy’sworks’ Miyamoto Rei comes with a soft chest part, Q-six’s Linda designed resin is available for order once again, Miku and Narika are coming in resin from Volks, and more! Wonder Festival is in five days and counting – stay tuned for further coverage, coming soon.

Anime News: Macross Frontier official site grand open

The official site for spring ’08 TV anime Macross Frontier (Wikipedia) staged a full renovation today, with sections open detailing the story, mechanics, characters, music, and staff credits for the show. In addition, the information section was updated with the news that spinoff manga will be serialized in both Shounen Ace (starting in the February ’08 issue, already on sale) and Comp Ace (starting in the April issue, out on 2/26) magazines, and that a “25th Anniversary MACROSS MUSEUM” will be on display at Wonder Festival 2008 Winter. The exhibit will include new promotional footage from Macross F as well as a history of Valkyrie models on display, a talk show featuring artist Tenjin Hidetaka and modeler Yamazaki Gunsou, a karaoke contest, and more. We’ll stay on top of this as more details come to light! (no more)

February 9-11 figure news roundup

[ERO] Figure News: Orchid Seed Wonder Festival 2008 Winter lineup

Orchid Seed updated their official site this afternoon with the lineup of items they’ll have for sale at Wonder Festival 2008 Winter. We scooped the limited edition of their Chichinoe+ 2 figure yesterday in our coverage from Hobby Japan, but seeing her here these limited edition colors seem like a definite step back from the original, alas. Far more exciting is news of the two resin kits to be on sale, an Ishiyama Satoshi-sculpted Kanu Unchou in (castoffable?) bikini, and a Nekomaru-sculpted Kazami Mizuho from Onegai Teacher. The details of these don’t really matter – what’s important is that precedent decrees that both of these kits will inevitably be released as PVC at some point in the coming year, which is totally awesome news for fans of Kanu, Mizuho, and Ishiyama Satoshi’s mad sculpting skills. Pictures below:

Figure News: January 25th news roundup

A comprehensive list of Wonder Festival 2008 Winter event-limited items, speculation regarding the castoffability of New Line’s Kousaka Tamaki (private version), Zero no Tsukaima Louise and Wolf and Spices Horo from Resinya, and a hot Kusanagi Motoko action figure from Medicom Toy.

Figure News: March ’08 Hobby Japan preview

The March 2008 issue of Hobby Japan magazine will be on store shelves tomorrow (January 25th), but we’ve got an early look at it today courtesy of 2chan’s hobby board. Several interesting items to scoop today, including a castoffable Queen’s Gate Nijihara Ink (of Moetan fame), a look at the next Queen’s Blade character, a Volks PVC series featuring characters from Alice Soft’s upcoming Choukou Sennin Haruka (Beat Blades Haruka), several new PVC items from Griffon, and a bunch of Wonder Festival preview news. And more! Details below:

Figure News: January 22 news roundup

Figure News: Little Busters’ Kurugaya Yuiko from Toy’sworks, Alter and Revoltech at WF 2008 Winter, release delays

Toy’sworks put up a promotional image on their official site today advertising the production of a Kurugaya Yuiko figure from Key’s Little Busters!. She’s scheduled for release in May at 6,800 yen retail and 1/8 scale (12 cm tall). In other figure news, the industry presence at Wonder Festival 2008 Winter is ramping up today with the announcement from Alter of a limited edition white version of their Quiz Magic Academy Sharon figure for sale at the event, and Kaiyodo’s announcement on their Revoltech Blog that they’ll be releasing their Gurren Lagann Revoltech at the event, a whopping three months before its official street date. Finally, word is in from Orchid Seed that their January release lineup (Feane, Al Ajif / Another Blood, and Fumie) has been pushed back to February, and Max Factory’s Onegai Onsen trading figures have been pushed back to February as well. (no more)

Figure News: official Wonder Festival page updated for 2008 Winter

It’s never too soon to start the hype for the year’s biggest biannual figure and garage kit expo, and Kaiyodo kicks things off in their typically sparse style with a minor update to their official Wonder Festival page. We get a first glimpse of the new Wonda and Reset designs that will grace the event catalog on February 24th, as well as some interesting attendance statistics: they expect 43,000 people to come to the event this winter (up from 36,500 two years ago), and will be occupying five of the six East halls of the Tokyo Big Sight. As the event approaches the next official update we can expect will be over at, so we’ll keep an eye open early in the new year for that. If you’re looking for some time to kill in the interim why not check out our coverage of Wonder Fesival 2007 Summer? (no more)
