Magazine Review: Megami vol. 97 (June 2008)

The June ‘08 edition of Megami Magazine was released today, and we’re here with the scoop of its contents! With poster entries from most of the bishoujo anime of the season along with several looks ahead at what we can expect in the summer it’s a pretty well-rounded issue, and though soft in a couple of parts (too much tiny Nanoha) there are a few standout offerings that make the purchase worth it in the end. Moon Phase scoops the news of a new Higurashi OVA and talks about yuri love in Koihime Musou revealed in this issue, but we’re here for the posters:

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 96 (May 2008)

The May 2008 issue of Megami Magazine was released today, and we’ve got a thorough review of it here! The sticker price was bumped up from the standard 780 yen to 840 yen for this issue, but it comes with a couple of great extras that more than make up for the slight price increase - a double sided pencil board brings us a look at Saber of Fate/stay night as drawn by Nanoha creator Tsuzuki Masaki, with the reverse side an illustration of Fate Testarossa by Takeuchi Takashi. Other extras include large Clannad and Shana posters and an alternate cover for Nanoha StrikerS manga vol. 2, as well as the continuation of Ditama Bow’s Yotsunoha manga. Oh, and there are lots of great posters, too. :3

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 95 (April 2008)

We revisit the hallowed posteriffic pages of Megami Magazine for the first time in a few months to find a very solid issue indeed, including offerings from Shana II, Clannad, Aria, Kimiaru, Nanoha, Spice and Wolf, To Heart 2, Kanokon, Minami-ke, Gunslinger Girls, Kimikiss, Bamboo Blade, Yotsunoha, Rosario to Vampire, Ikkitousen Great Guardians, and more. Is it just me, or is there more nekkidness in this issue than in the past year’s lot combined? See below for a preview:

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 92 (January 2008)

I wasn’t able to pick up last month’s issue of Megami soon enough to do a timely review, but we return this month with a look at the latest the bishoujo anime pinup magazine has to offer. As was the case two months ago it seems Megami has once again outshone the competition from Comp Heroines with another great issue! Check it out for particularly delectable offerings from Bamboo Blade, Kodomo no Jikan, Dragonaut, and more.

Feature: Fall 2007 Anime Roundup

In a twist on past seasonal rundowns, we present the fall 2007 batch of anime as a top ten list (plus one) of the shows most likely to receive a warm reception by the doujinshi community this winter. Want to know what you’re likely to see out of Comic Market in December? Read on for our impression of the new season, doujin style!

Magazine Review: Comp Heroines vol. 6

Volume six of the bimonthly Comptiq supplementary bishoujo poster magazine is here! Once again it’s heavy on the Lucky Star (not surprising coming from a Kadokawa publication); there’s also plenty of poster material from other (mostly summer) shows, and a couple of nice extras.

Movie Review: Evangelion Shin Gekijouban: Jo (EVANGELION 1.0: YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE)

With Hideaki Anno’s proclamation back in February that the new Rebuild of Evangelion movies would be all things to all people, present a panacea to the ills of a languishing anime industry, and sate old fans while bringing new ones into the fold, curiosity was high as I entered the theater this morning. Would the new Evangelion surpass the original, managing to heave its ponderous bulk above the weight of twelve years of mainstream merchandising - or would the temptation to stick an IV into the goose laying golden eggs prove to be too strong? Signs point to morbidly obese poultry…

Then again, Shipon wants to have a word with you. That’s right, there are two reviews right here in a single post! And they said it couldn’t be done… Note: most spoilers are clearly marked, but peruse at your own risk.

Pure Love Renaissance : Comic Market 72

Shipon deals out on his Comiket 72 experience covering sunburn, long lines, cosplay, an HD meetup, record numbers and how a good night’s sleep can make a BIG difference when a 5 hour lineup awaits.

Event Report: Comic Market 72, day 1

A quick rundown of the first day of Comic Market 72, from one man’s perspective (Shipon will be along later with a bunch of much nicer pictures, including cosplay, so be sure to stop back for that~). Day one verdict: fucking hot, but fun in hindsight.

Magazine Review: Comp H’s (Comp Heroines) vol. 5 - UPDATED

Volume five of Comp H’s magazine is
on sale today! Though not yet listed on the on Comptiq’s official site, we’re here with the scoop on what looks to be another clear win for the Lucky Star fans. See inside for Shiraishi Minoru gosurori cosplay, a Konata mask, an Akira cell phone strap, a loooooong park bench, and more posters than can be counted on the figures of two regularly endowed human hands. Edit: Updated with shots of the Lucky Star Nico Douga parody and the AX Haruhi concert report!

Magazine Review: Megami 86 vs. Comp H’s 4

With Comp Heroines now established in its bimonthly slot, how does the late-May release of volume four stack up against the monthly competition from veteran poster magazine Megami? Check the list of posters, extras, and other content below for a summary judgement.

Magazine Review: Otaku USA, volume 1

I was sitting in the office today when my boss walked up and dropped a copy of this publication onto my desk. “They’re saying this is going to be the next Newtype”, he said. “Bigger than Newtype, maybe.” I flipped it open… and within thirty seconds knew I had to write this review. Note: the actual review starts roughly where the pictures end.

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 85

It’s been a long time since our last Megami review, but it seems they keep churning them out regardless… The magazine’s quality slumped after last summer’s Haruhi & Co. festorama, but now that a new season of shows with a whole new cast of bishoujo legends in the making is upon us, how will the hallowed (one might say posterized) pages of Megami fare? Not so well, it seems, but this issue is likely to have one or two redeeming points that would justify the purchase for the more forgiving among us. Which ones those would be is up to you:

Spring 2007 Anime Roundup: Episode II

We return tonight with the second part (first part here) of our increasingly obsolete feature on the new shows of spring 2007, bringing you the HD take on Darker Than Black, Seirei no Moribito, El Cazador de la Bruja, Kaibutsu Oujo, Nanoha StrikerS, Seto no Hanayome, and Sisters of Wellber. If you haven’t already passed judgment on them yourself (or even if you have), stop by and have a look!

Spring 2007 Anime Roundup: Part 1

Spring is here! ‘Tis the season of cherry blossoms, freshly starched school uniforms, confessions of love, and more new anime than a single person could possibly keep up with who wasn’t clinically insane (or had some semblance of a social life). Today we begin the arduous task of handling that insanity for you, providing the HD perspective on as many of the season’s new shows as we possibly can before we’re hauled off to a room with padded walls. They say an initial sign of madness is referring to oneself in the plural… In today’s installment, pulled from the quickly swelling grab bag of raws at hand: Gurren Lagann, Hayate no Gotoku, Lovely Complex, and Lucky Star.

Magazine Review: Comp H’s vol. 3

Kadokawa Shoten continues its assault on Megami’s bishoujo poster magazine monopoly with the March 26th release of Comp H’s vol. 3. This latest installment offers the same high quality and great extras the previous two had to offer, at 750 yen to Megami’s 780, and if I were the latter I might consider switching to the brown pants right about now. (pictures below)

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 79

There are winners and losers every month when it comes to Megami, and this issue seems crafted to thwart my personal tastes in almost every respect (gosurori Haruhi being a notable exception). That said, fans of Negima and many of the new moe shows of the season will come away happy, and those who dig the teen versions of Nanoha and Hayate should appreciate the extra that’s included. Read on!

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 77

The October 2006 edition of Megami Magazine hit the racks yesterday. HD takes a look inside, bringing the hard-hitting, incisive coverage the topic so richly deserves. SOS-dan: hold on to your pants.

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 76

The scans have already made the rounds of 4chan and danbooru, but for the curious HD presents a sequential rundown of this month’s two-dimensional swimsuit issue. A midsummer night’s dream indeed - SOS-dan take note!

Anime Review: Welcome to the NHK ep. 1

Irrational exhuberance and snap judgements regarding new (anime, game, manga) titles are a HD hallmark, but in this post we break down the initial spasm of NHK-induced glee into a more nuanced position. Is the show really a worthy successor to Haruhi’s time slot?

Magazine Review: Megami 75 vs. Comp H’s 1

Kadokawa Shoten weighed in on June 30th with the pilot issue of Comp H’s (the “H” is for “heroine”), a new poster magazine in the mold of the venerable Megami. Being the imprint of choice for titles such as Haruhi and NHK ni Youkoso (not to mention Evangelion, Keroro Gunsou, etc.), will the upstart be able to grab significant market share - and more importantly, how do its contents stack up against its only rival (now that Dengeki Animaga appears defunct)? It’s Haruhi cover vs. Haruhi cover in a battle to the pain (of your wallet)!
