Eromanga Toshokan vol. 011: B-Chiku

Our Eromanga Toshokan review series returns with a look at the latest offering from veteran mangaka DISTANCE, who according to his Mangaoh product search has been in the business for at least ten years now. As I’ve seen his books come out over the years I’ve typically picked them up, thumbed through them with serious consideration, and ultimately put them back down unpurchased; this is the first to make it into my collection, for reasons I hope will become clear below. Note: this is a hardcore [ERO] book. If you’re under 18 or not interested in hardcore content this post is not for you.

Otaku no Musume-san drama CD announced

Today in conjunction with the release of the fourth volume of Sutahiro manga Otaku no Musume-san, a two volume drama CD set was announced! The story of a 20-something otaku who finds a daughter on his doorstep one day that he didn’t know he had has come a long way from its humble webcomic roots, currently serialized in Dragon Age and with this new Drama CD set produced by some of the best talent in the business (including the “original landlady” Shimamoto Sumi reprising her spiritual role as OnMs landlady Asou Taeko). The first CD volume is scheduled for release on June 27th at 2,940 yen. Check out the CD official site for a very funny manga promo movie as well as voice samples.

The main reason I’m posting this (other than for inherent awesomeness) is that drama CDs have traditionally paved the way to anime series, and with this as one of my favorite manga currently running the mere possibility of an anime in its future engages the engines of delicious fanboy self-delusion. We’ll keep an eye out for further news. (no more)

Goods Review: Ikkitousen Limited Treasure Box

When we first reported on this item back in November I was a bit skeptical as to how it would turn out; it seemed like a bunch of expensive knick-knacks worth less than the sum of its parts, little more than an attempt to sucker Ikkitousen fans like myself into parting with our hard-earned cash without providing much in return. After having the chance to peruse my copy in person my opinion has not changed, but as both a sucker and an Ikkitousen fan I have to say I’m happy with the result, and would appreciate being pandered to in a similar fashion by other shows in the future (Sekirei, I’m looking at you). Read on for a textbook primer on how to be swindled in style:

Eromanga Toshokan vol. 010: Daisuki Dayo

Another volume of the Eromanga Toshokan is at hand, this time showcasing the superlative work of veteran doujin artist and eromangaka Youshuu Ohepe. I actually promised to review this the day before it came out, and while I may have forgotten about the promise in the interim the book is good enough that it came over and shook its sweaty shorts at me until I picked it up again for review. Note: this is a hardcore [ERO] book. If you’re under 18 or not interested in hardcore content this post is not for you. If you’re an adult with a taste for immaculately rendered thighs of thunder, by all means read on!

Eromanga Toshokan vol. 009: Nyuuseihin

The Eromanga Toshokan returns after a long hiatus to bring a look at the most recent volume from veteran eromanga and doujin author Shijima Yukio. Long time fans of the very generously endowed female persuasion have likely come across his work in the past, especially back in the early days when his was one of the sites that could be depended on for the occasional delicious update; while his site has remained largely stagnant in recent years he still produces regular eromanga chapters and the occasional doujinshi, and so it is with pleasure that we delve into this, his most recent offering. Note: this is a hardcore [ERO] book. If you’re under 18 or not interested in hardcore content this post is not for you. If this condition does not apply to you, by all means read on!

DLsite.com opens Books division

Originally launched several years ago as a download shop for amateur doujin works, DLsite has been steadily expanding the scope of its offerings through the opening of professional PC game shops, a shop for female-oriented material, an all-ages shop, an English language shop, and as of today (April 15th, 2008) an e-book shop.

DLsite Books replaces the now-defunct DLsite Cosplay, which had received increasingly fewer submissions over the past year; those who had purchased cosplay items can still access them via the book shop’s calendar history (where they are still for sale as well), though it seems future cosplay items will not be accepted for consignment at present.

DLsite Books launched today with an initial lineup of 30 erotic manga volumes and novels from various publishers, and is planning to update with new titles daily – exciting news for foreign fans with otherwise limited ability to obtain these volumes, or for anyone looking for items that are otherwise out of print. The initial run of 30 titles contains a pretty wide range of offerings, including one that we reviewed here [WARNING: MANIAC ERO]; time will tell whether the focus will remain on older titles, but here’s hoping to see a mix of old and new as we monitor future daily updates (and bring you the best of the bunch).

The books are being sold in PDF format and have downloadable preview segments online. Prices are roughly equivalent to the analog versions.

In related news, today’s DLsite update changed the visual look of the site interface. Our download tutorial is still accurate however, should you be interested in procuring any of these fine wares.

Preorder open for Hanaharu adult manga compilation “Shoujo Material”

Otaku goods shop Toranoana posted a preorder listing today for Naruko Hanaharu‘s first ever eromanga tankoubon, dubbed Shoujo Material. More details have emerged on the volume since we first scooped it back in February: the name (Shoujo Material), the tentative price (1,365 yen), and a release time frame (May 2008) are all present in the preorder listing, along with an image that is likely either the cover or the frontspiece. As most eromanga tankoubon retail for around 1,000 yen, the elevated price indicates that Hanaharu’s book will contain more than the usual number of color pages; It’s not likely that we’ll get any further details on the release before it reaches store shelves, but we’ll be keeping a close eye out for an official street date. Presumed cover image below:

Sekirei TV anime announced! (updated)

The official Sekirei manga site at Square-Enix’s Young Gangan Magazine brought the announcement last night: as previously rumored, the bishoujo fighting-themed manga from Gokurakuin Sakurako (Ashika Sakura) will become an anime some time this year! It will be directed by Kusakawa Keizou (recent directorial work includes Nanoha StrikerS and Inukami), script from Yoshioka Takawo (Sky Girls, Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny, Zero no Tsukaima), character design from Tomooka Shinpei (Inukami), and animation production from Seven Arcs (the Nanoha series, Inukami, SHAFT’s Negima, Red Garden, Zero no Tsukaima II, Da Capo II, the Yakin Byoutou series). The official anime website will be at Sekirei TV.com when it’s established; we’ll be keeping a close eye out for further news on the series as it develops. Update: The show’s official site is now online, and while it doesn’t offer much information beyond what we already knew we do get a first look at the anime character designs, and the cover of the 6th volume of the manga, due out on March 25th. Youshuu Ohepe second tankoubon on sale tomorrow

Fans of well-rounded heroines with a sense of presence on the page take note: rising star doujin and eromanga artist Yoshuu Ohepe will unleash his second tankoubon (eromanga compilation) tomorrow, March 7th, under the title Daisuki da yo. The book contains eight stories formerly serialized in Comic Mujin, and samples of it can be found in the Ohepe directory at Mujin’s official site. In addition to past doujin work prominently featuring Chun Li and Ichigo 100% characters, his first tankoubon Aneki… was recently adapted as a two-part eroanime OVA by Pink Pineapple. I’ll try to get a review of this new book up when I can obtain a copy. (no more)

Hanaharu eromanga compilation announced

I hope Zepy will pardon me for quoting him directly, but I couldn’t contain myself when I heard the news: according to the latest issue of eromanga serial magazine Kairakuten, Naruhiko Hanaharu will be releasing his first ever tankoubon compilation of eromanga soon! I’m not sure whether I’ve raved about his work properly here in the past or not, but as one of his legion of diehard fans all I can say is it’s about bloody time. I’ll be keeping a very close eye on this story for any developments – first, to go pick up that issue of Kairakuten. I was wondering what he’d been doing since the Kamichu manga ended… (no more)

Dengeki Gao suspension confirmed

The official Dengeki Comic Gao website was updated with the news that the April 2008 issue of the magazine, on sale today, will be its last. A translation of the message posted to the site follows:

“With this issue GAO’s publication will be suspended. We would like to thank our readers for enjoying the magazine over its 15 year history. Works currently serialized in GAO will be moved to a new magazine. Please continue to watch the development of manga artists and works that were born and grew up in these pages. This page will be updated again in early April.”

It seems the earlier news to this effect was correct; it remains to be seen exactly how the currently running manga will be currently divided among MediaWorks’ other magazines, but it seems likely that Daioh will absorb the lion’s share. (no more)

Manga News: Dengeki Comic Gao to suspend serialization

Via Moon Phase Diary: according to an advertisement in this month’s Dengeki Daioh, sister magazine Dengeki Comic Gao is to see an indefinite suspension of publication, presumably beginning after this month’s issue (due out on the 27th). Several of the manga currently serialized in Gao will begin running in Daioh, including Venus Versus Virus, Wagaya no Oinari-sama, Kemeko Deluxe, ef – a fairy tale of the two, and Gurren Lagann; the others will presumably end or suspend their runs with the next issue of the magazine. It seems a bit odd that the magazine’s official site shows no sign of the move, so we’ll keep an eye out for the next few days to make sure this information is accurate. (no more)

[ERO] Goods News: Ikkitousen Treasure Limited Box uncensored

Just a quick note to mention that Getchu’s listing for the Ikkitousen Treasure Limited Box we scooped at the beginning of November contains an uncensored look at both the Hakufu bust and the Kanu oppai mousepad that come with the set. Preorders are open through December 2nd for those thinking of picking it up (Amazon and Mangaoh both have it available to international customers). Uncensored picture below:

Editor’s Desk: chronicling the erosion of 2D free speech

Whether you’re a fan of loli or kyonyuu, futanari or shota, twins or tentacles, figures, anime, manga, or doujinshi, increased public scrutiny in Japan is affecting the nature of your hobby – right now. What follows is a reckoning of events that while superficially disconnected combine to show the changing face of otaku media, a landscape less colorful and varied in its delights and perversions than it once was, and one that may never be the quite same again.

[ERO] Goods News: Wani Books presents “Ikkitousen Treasure Limited BOX Publication”, includes Hakufu bust and Kanu oppai mousepad

During a habitual run through 2chan’s mokeiura board this morning I noticed a most curious item that bore further investigation. It turns out that Wani Books, publishers of the Comic Gum manga anthology in which Ikkitousen is serialized, is producing what they’re calling an Ikkitousen Treasure Limited BOX Publication. It’s a …box, apparently, containing seven special limited edition items which are detailed below:

[ERO] Protoculture News: artist Nakayohi Mogudan opens new official site

Famous for his fantastic renderings of Ayanami Rei as well as his designs for Scrapped Princess and Brave Soul, doujin artist and illustrator Mogudan opened a new official site earlier today. He had closed his old location some time ago and was operating out of a temporary site for the past several months; hopefully the more robust content at the new site means that he’s found a permanent home. Notably lacking at the new site are any references to his Ayanami doujin line (aside from the site address itself), instead his “works” lineup includes illustrations for Toranoana’s recently scooped doujin compilation as well as his eromanga cover work (primarily for Comic Unreal) and Orchid Seed’s Feane PVC figure based on one such illustration. Here’s hoping this new site migration marks a resurgence in productivity for this bastion of iconic 2D erotica, and thanks to Faust for the scoop! (no more)

Manga News: third volume of Queen’s Blade anthology comics announced

The December ’07 issue of Hobby Japan magazine had an advertisement for a third anthology volume of manga based on the characters from the Queen’s Blade series of combat artbooks. It’s set for release on November 24th, which is at this point all we know about the book (other than that the cover will be penned by [ERO] Jibril and Nanael character designer Kuuchuu Yousai); past volumes of the anthology have included work from artists such as F.S, Rebis, and Kokuryuugan, and as such are basically officially sanctioned borderline ecchi doujin compilations. We’ll be keeping an eye out for a list of contributors coming online in the next few weeks. Cover image from the advertisement below:

Eromanga Toshokan vol. 008: Chichi Kano

In our Eromanga Toshokan segment we strive to bring a broad range of creators and styles to the attention of fans, from the mainstream to those that attract a more niche audience. Today’s entry is definitely one of the latter, the first collection of serial work from veteran doujin artist HG Chagawa. His style is both distinctive and extreme, and as such this review is not recommended for those not interested in abnormal depictions of the human body. Let me reiterate: you probably don’t want to read beyond this point unless you are intrigued by the concept of breasts the size of a full human torso. 18+ ONLY, NWS.

[ERO] Game News: all-ages manga Shureishi to recieve adult game adaptation

Moon Phase Diary reports that Shureishi, a manga currently serialized in Comic Gum (preview here), is scheduled to receive an eroge adaptation. While there have been plenty of adult game to all-ages manga conversions in the past, to my knowledge this is the first example of the opposite occurring. That fact alone is worth a bit for its trivia value, but what really has me excited about the project is the fact that mangaka Ryuu Mokunen will be handling the game designs as well. He draws some of the most purely erotic doujinshi I have ever seen, and I discovered him just in time to pick up a couple of his books in ’05-’06 before his doujin activity stopped (presumably to start work on this manga) so it’s great to know that he’s coming back to the world of adult illustration. The scenario will be penned not by manga author Takaoka Yoshiaki but instead by veteran galge writer Futaba Akira, and the game is set for release in early summer of 2008. We’ll be keeping watch for further details as the project unfolds. (no more)

[ERO] Game News: Sengoku Rance recieves two manga adaptations, Uesugi Kenshin hug pillow cover (updated)

Via Moon Phase Diary, the Integrated Dakimakura Research Institute, and the G’s Magazine official blog: Great news for the [ERO] Sengoku Rance fans! Not only is the game still rated over Fate as most recommended eroge by readers of Tech Gian, word is in from the latest issue of Dragon Age Pure that starting with its next issue (on sale December 20th) a Sengoku Rance comic will be serialized within, penned by none other than up and coming (ero)mangaka Sameda Koban. For those who can’t wait two months for their Sengoku manga fix, the first volume of Dengeki G’s Festival! COMIC will include not only an ero-ero Uesugi Kenshin dakimakura cover but also the beginning of a serialized Rance manga by Naruse Hirofumi. The latter is due out on November 26th, but as of posting I can’t find anywhere that has it up for preorder… We’ll be keeping a close watch on this one. Update follows:

Eromanga Toshokan vol. 007: Happiness!

In today’s edition of our stroll down eromanga lane we take a look at the most recent work* from Amatarou, an artist who is tenacious in his pursuit of the awesome. I hope you’ll agree that “Happiness!” in the title is not mere hyperbole, and while reading this review might not make you a better person it will certainly uplift your spirits (or something else). 18+ ONLY, NWS.

Manga News: Hatsune Miku manga announced, to begin serialization in November

According to Moon Phase Diary a manga featuring Yamaha’s virtual idol Hatsune Miku will begin serialization in the January 2008 issue of Comic RUSH (on sale November 26th), and will be penned by Miku character designer KEI. I haven’t done much Miku reporting (Zepy‘s the man to go for for up to the minute news on everyone’s favorite voice synth) but this is a great development in my book; too often characters are poorly interpreted by mangaka other than the original creator, but with her designer on board for the project I’d say Miku is in safe hands. [ERO] Manga News: Comic Yurihime “Wildrose” anthology goes on sale

Ichijinsha, publishers of Comic Yurihime, released a volume of ecchi yuri manga dubbed Yurihime Wildrose yesterday (October 18th) in conjunction with the release of the manga serial’s 10th volume. Akiba Blog has a look inside, and the [ERO] content seems quite charming indeed. :3 While nominally “by women for women”, the fact that Ichijinsha put a column up at Akiba Blog reminds us that the beauty of the lily is appreciated by all genders… International fans can obtain Wildrose via Amazon and Mangaoh, and the standard Yurihime serial is available as well. Now if only we could get more news on the fourth season of MarimiteUpdate: the title of (non-ero) yuri game of the year is likely going to Kogado’s Solfege, due out on December 21st. Tanoshimi da wa~ Update 2: Akiba Blog has an uncensored look at Wildrose up this morning. (no more)

Eromanga Toshokan vol. 006: Mazo Chichi

Erect Sawaru is a doujin veteran of many years, and one whose work I’ve not always been fond of – his books tended in the past to be incredibly messy, to the point that it was nearly impossible to tell what was going on. This first collected volume of his serialized works carries over many of the traits of his doujin, but contains enough stuff from his more recent period to make it worth a second look. Note: this is a hardcore [ERO] book. If you’re under 18 or not interested in hardcore content this post is not for you. If neither of these conditions apply, by all means read on!

Eromanga Toshokan vol. 005: Mizugi Kanojo

We take a look today at the first eromanga compilation to be released from the pen of veteran artist Bosshi of doujin circle Askray. While he made a name for himself with work in more maniac themes this book is a straightforward departure from his normal fare, one I would venture to say is palatable across a broad range of tastes, like a delicious cake made of sunshine and happy, smiling girls. In swimsuits. See below for the most persuasive argument to date that the bikini was actually an evolutionary step back from the one piece. 18+ ONLY, NWS.

Eromanga Toshokan vol. 004: Juicy Fruits

Many HD readers are no doubt familiar with the extreme curves of Kotoyoshi Yumisuke’s manga penmanship, whether it be from his work on the Cool Devices eroanime of the mid nineties or the masterful job done by Icarus Publishing in bringing some of his more recent eromanga to an English readership. Today we take a look at perhaps his most visible volume of eromanga to date (due to its recent Icarus release), Juicy Fruits. Fans of the small-chested, beware… 18+ ONLY, NWS.

Figure Review: Kaiyodo’s Yotsuba Revoltech action figure from Yotsubato!

Yotsuba is the vivacious, green-haired heroine of Azuma Kiyohiko’s Yotsubato! manga (dubbed Yotsuba&! in its English edition). With very few exceptions the author has refused to condone derivative products based on his designs, until now; his production team has formed a very deliberate aesthetic around the franchise, and they no doubt wanted to be sure any figure version would stay true to that vision. They seem to believe Kaiyodo is the company that can deliver with a standard of quality in their Revoltech action figure line to match, and with Enoki Tomohide on sculpting duty there was little doubt this would be a solid item. But is Yotsuba: THE ACTION FIGURE fun? You damn well better believe it. :D

Eromanga Toshokan vol. 003: Katekyo

To offset the rather bizarre volume we last looked at for this column I thought Kishizuka Kenji’s 2003 classic Katekyo would be a good follow up in this, our third helping of Eromanga Toshokan. The title story of a socially awkward tutor and the student in love with her is easily one of my favorites in the genre, not to mention containing the only Fight Club reference I’ve ever seen in manga and a pair of hilarious omake pages (translated especially for this post!) that really get at the subtleties of Japan’s take on America. 18+ ONLY, NWS.

Eromanga Toshokan vol. 002: Jiru Max!!

For the second installation of our eromanga review series we bring you a book released in May of this year from rookie mangaka Drill Jiru. As his handle (“drill juice”) and the book’s title (“juice max”) imply this is a very messy offering, and one not for those made queasy by the sight of some maniac ero; for those into that sort of thing or interested in the craft of manga in general this is a deep offering from a talented artist at the beginning of what will hopefully be a long and fruitful career. 18+ ONLY, NWS.

Figure News: Gunnm Gaiden manga, Battle Angel Alita action figure up for preorder

A preorder listing is now online at Mangaoh for the much anticipated Gally (Alita) action figure that we’ve been tracking for the past few months. The figure is a limited edition extra to be included with a volume of Battle Angel Alita side story manga dubbed “Gunnm Gaiden”, and according to Mangaoh’s listing it’s set for a December 19th release at a slightly pricey 4,980 yen. I think many will agree that money is no object in this case… Mangaoh accepts international orders, which will be open until October 22nd. (no more)
