Magazine Review: Megami vol. 98 (July 2008)

With yesterday’s release of the July ’08 issue of Megami Magazine things are officially heating up in the countdown to issue 100! The sticker price was raised to reflect the presence of additional extras, and unlike last issue there are no Nanoha filler posters to be found – just pure original poster goodness, and a lot of nice ones at that. Read on for a look at one of the best Megami issues to appear in recent months:

July ’08 figure magazine postscript

Scans from Dengeki Hobby retrieved from 2chan’s mokeiura board yesterday evening report a few new interesting figure announcements: Goodsmile will be producing Unity Yuuno from Unisonshift Accent’s latest eroge project Unity Marriage. The sculpt is from Tokunaga Hironori, and she’s due out in “winter 2008” at 1/8 scale (20 cm tall), no price yet specified. The second item of note is a Diedrich Schultz (ディードリッヒ・シュルツ) figure from Eulenspiegel (オイレンシュピーゲル), a visual novel series illustrated by Hakua Ugetsu. Production is from Organic and the figure is due out in August at 1/8 scale; no further information is currently available. A Bulma (Dragonball) prize figure is also shown from Banpresto (out in June), along with a Nanoha Signum that can only be assumed to come from Atelier-Sai. The Bubba Yuki on the right is a mail-order kit promotion from Figure Maniax Otome-gumi, on sale June 10th. Images below:

Hobby Japan July 2008 preview 2 (updated)

Further scans from Hobby Japan were uploaded to 2chan last night after I went to bed (initial HJ July ’08 scoop here). I’ll fill in the details as soon as possible, but for now the scans are reproduced below: Update: Most of the details are now up, including information on a wide release of the Shiragami Ikkitousen trading figure set, Asakura Ryouko and Vocaloid Rin/Len Nendoroids, Organic’s Kawazoe Tamaki, and more:

Hobby Japan July 2008 preview

2chan’s mokeiura board represents once again with an early glimpse of this month’s issue of Hobby Japan magazine. We bring a rundown of the most exciting bishoujo figure news appearing in this July issue, including the announcement of a new Excellent Model CORE Queen’s Blade figure, three new Figma action figures from Nanoha, Lucky Star, and Ikkitousen, an epic Ivy from Soul Calibur 3, and a whole lot more:

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 97 (June 2008)

The June ’08 edition of Megami Magazine was released today, and we’re here with the scoop of its contents! With poster entries from most of the bishoujo anime of the season along with several looks ahead at what we can expect in the summer it’s a pretty well-rounded issue, and though soft in a couple of parts (too much tiny Nanoha) there are a few standout offerings that make the purchase worth it in the end. Moon Phase scoops the news of a new Higurashi OVA and talks about yuri love in Koihime Musou revealed in this issue, but we’re here for the posters:

Magazine limited Kanu, Kanokon figure series unveiled

Official site updates for Comic Gum and Comic Alive today provide us with a couple of rare Sunday figure scoops: first is news that the UArt Bladeworx Mogudan Kanu Unchou we’ve been following for the past month or so will be coming in a limited clear pink version exclusively via mail order from Comic Gum. Details such as price and release date don’t appear in this online listing, but they can be assumed to be comparable to her unlimited counterpart.

In other news, Comic Alive has announced a Kanokon heroine figure project that will be rolled out with preorders opening one per issue over the next four months. The first one will be a 1/10 scale version of Chizuru, and is available for preorder in the magazine’s current issue. This is similar to the promotion they ran last year for Zero no Tsukaima, which produced the only Henrietta and Kirche figures I’m aware of to date; here’s hoping this announcement doesn’t similarly doom Kanokon’s cast to figure obscurity. Images of both newly announced items below:

Magazine Review: Dengeki Moeoh June 2008

Dengeki Moeoh. More than a magazine, Moeoh is a bimonthly artistic encyclopedia of moe that features original full color spreads from some of the highest profile artists in Japan’s 2D industry, coupled with articles, serial manga, and great extras that are themselves worth the price of admission. If it’s not perfectly clear from this introduction what follows is less of a review and more of a fanboyish evangelistic rant about what is truly one of the greatest products to originate from the modern Moe Industrial Complex – and the June 2008 issue (released yesterday, April 26th) is no exception. Spring is in the air, and that means short skirts and long stockings, and the perfect season for an exploration of that most ineffable of moetic qualities, the zettai ryouiki zone…

Hobby Japan June 2008 preview

Scans from advance copies of this month’s hobby magazines appeared on 2chan’s mokeiura board earlier today, and as usual we bring a summary of the latest bishoujo figure news from their pages translated here for your perusal. Highlights include a new Yamachichi sculpt of Queen’s Gate Alice (adult version), the first full-body color look at Mellona, an awesome Dozle Zabi from the original Gundam (definitely not a bishoujo), the prototype for an Oinarisama Tenko Kuugen from FREEing, release information on Figma Mikuru and Izuki, followups on several of the figures we’ve been tracking over past months, and more!

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 96 (May 2008)

The May 2008 issue of Megami Magazine was released today, and we’ve got a thorough review of it here! The sticker price was bumped up from the standard 780 yen to 840 yen for this issue, but it comes with a couple of great extras that more than make up for the slight price increase – a double sided pencil board brings us a look at Saber of Fate/stay night as drawn by Nanoha creator Tsuzuki Masaki, with the reverse side an illustration of Fate Testarossa by Takeuchi Takashi. Other extras include large Clannad and Shana posters and an alternate cover for Nanoha StrikerS manga vol. 2, as well as the continuation of Ditama Bow‘s Yotsunoha manga. Oh, and there are lots of great posters, too. :3

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 95 (April 2008)

We revisit the hallowed posteriffic pages of Megami Magazine for the first time in a few months to find a very solid issue indeed, including offerings from Shana II, Clannad, Aria, Kimiaru, Nanoha, Spice and Wolf, To Heart 2, Kanokon, Minami-ke, Gunslinger Girls, Kimikiss, Bamboo Blade, Yotsunoha, Rosario to Vampire, Ikkitousen Great Guardians, and more. Is it just me, or is there more nekkidness in this issue than in the past year’s lot combined? See below for a preview:

April ’08 Hobby Japan preview

The April ’08 edition of Hobby Japan has once again reached the hands of intrepid 2channers a few days early, and this issue is particularly rich with items sure to be of interest (and sure to be on display at Wonder Festival on Sunday): includes a new “Capcomaniax” line of Excellent Model figures from Megahouse, scoops on the next two CORE Queen’s Blade figures, repaint versions of two others, the latest from Goodsmile and Max Factory, news regarding the next round of Shuraki releases, details on Yamato’s sexy Ringo and Griffon’s sexy Ryofu, an elven archer from Yamashita Shunya, and much more – read on for pictures and item descriptions:

Goods News: Dengeki G’s Festival Deluxe vol. 2 comes with TH2 pillowcase, contoured mousepad

According to the product entry recently created for it at Mangaoh, Dengeki G’s Festival Deluxe vol. 2 will come with some awesome extras: first is a Kouno Harumi dakimakura cover, one of the heroines of To Heart 2: Another Days. It’s single-sided, features an original illustration, and is 50 x 155 cm in size. Second is a Kousaka Tamaki “contoured breast” (oppai) mousepad, featuring another original illustration; and finally a Yamada Michiru / Yoshioka Chie cellphone cleaner and strap. Mangaoh accepts international orders, and it should be listed at Amazon.co.jp soon as well. Images below:

Figure News: limited edition black uniform version of Alter’s Kanu coming from Hobby Channel, etc.

Some bits of figure news coming over the desk from yesterday evening: first is news that Hobby Japan’s online arm Hobby Channel will be offering a 700-piece limited edition run of a black school uniform variant of Alter’s Kanu Unchou PVC from Ikkitousen. She’s set for release in April at specs similar to her regular edition counterpart (1/8 scale, 21.5 cm tall, 7,140 yen) and preorders open at the Hobby Japan online shop on January 7th. See below for more news:

Figure News: Hobby Japan February ’08 preview

The February ’08 edition of Hobby Japan magazine has leaked four days before its scheduled publication! 2chan’s mokeura board brings the goods, and we bring them to you – a representative sample of the new goodness to come in the next couple of months, and updates of some items we’ve been watching. Warning: this post is not for the faint of heart or those offended by epic-class broad backsides. Or shota. =_=;;

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 92 (January 2008)

I wasn’t able to pick up last month’s issue of Megami soon enough to do a timely review, but we return this month with a look at the latest the bishoujo anime pinup magazine has to offer. As was the case two months ago it seems Megami has once again outshone the competition from Comp Heroines with another great issue! Check it out for particularly delectable offerings from Bamboo Blade, Kodomo no Jikan, Dragonaut, and more.

Magazine Review: Comp H’s (Comp Heroines) Vol. 7

The most recent edition of bishoujo anime magazine Comp H’s came in yesterday, complete with its usual passel of pinup posters (alliteration not included) and the obligatory dose of Kadokawa mandated Kyoani tie-ups (mostly Lucky Star). Read on for a preview of the poster selection as well as the other goodies bundled with this issue of the delicious ‘zine!

Figure News: Hobby Japan January 2008 leftovers

We’ve already scooped the bulk of what was new in this month’s issue of Hobby Japan, but after getting my hands on an actual copy of the magazine last night I noticed a few other odds and ends that might be of interest. Includes updates from Witchblade, Kimikiss, Code Geass, Queen’s Blade, Bible Black, and Nitro+ character designer Niθ; details below:

Figure News: January ’08 Hobby Japan preview

Hot on the heels of this morning’s Hatsune Miku Nendoroid leak comes further scoopage from the as-yet unpublished pages of the January ’08 issue of Hobby Japan magazine! On the Queen’s Blade front we get our first look at Megahouse’s Shizuka in color (scooped back at Wanfesu), along with the news that she’s due out next spring at 5,775 yen and is castoffable. We get looks beneath the clothing of both Airi and Nix as well, with Nix revealed as a lower castoff. We have word that an Izuruha figure will accompany a box set release of the four volumes of Ru Li Lu Ra manga (details in the next HJ issue). Word from Goodsmile as well that they’re producing a Kuonji Shinra figure from Kimigashu (no details yet), and a look at the MMS Yoko action figure coming from Konami in December. Last but not least we have Akashiya Moka from Rosario to Vampire coming from Shueisha on May 23rd at 5,000 yen, and what for me is the heart-stopping revelation of the issue: the Orchid Seed Ishiyama Satoshi-sculpted Witchblade Shiori kit scooped at the Miyazawa Model Exhibition is coming out in resin at Hobby Complex 02 this Sunday, November 25th. Holding my breath until the PVC announcement… visual evidence below:

Figure News: December 2007 Hobby Japan presents Ikkitousen’s Ryomou in unlimited PVC from Comic Gum and Goodsmile

We’ve already covered most of the exciting news from this issue of Hobby Japan thanks to some early leaks (Cattleya in color and various Lineage II and Queen’s Blade items, etc.), but now that the magazine is officially on sale one final item caught my attention: Goodsmile and Comic Gum will be teaming up to bring this previously mail order only Ryomou Shimei PVC to us in full and wide release (though in an alternate color). Sculpted by French Doll of circle Cerberus Project, this black version of the original blue-trimmed kit is slated to go on sale in January of next year at 1/7 scale (28 cm tall) and 7,800 yen retail. Magazine scan below:

Figure News: more from December’s Hobby Japan includes Lineage II, more Queen’s Blade, Manabi Straight

2chan’s mokeiura board is a gift that just keeps on giving, tonight divulging further scans from the as-yet unreleased December ’07 edition of Hobby Japan. In addition to Cattleya in color we have further Queen’s Blade news: the Medicos Entertainment trading figure set that has been listed on the official QB site for months is finally in color with a release date of mid-February ’08 (Nowa and Reina shown here); also Griffon keeps hammering away at their resin / cold cast lineup with a new Nix and designs for several other kits in the pipeline. In Lineage II news we have word that Yujin is releasing a capsule figure set of the game’s female characters at 300 yen each, and word from Goodsmile that preorders will be opening soon at their official online shop for the reissue of their Dark Elf female mage. Finally, news is in that Toy’sworks is planning the release of a Manabi Straight trading figure set, due out in late February. All this and more can be seen in the images below:

Magazine Review: Megami vol. 90

When we reviewed Comp Heroines vol. 6 a few days ago I came away with the hope that Megami would field a more solid offering this month by comparison, and boy did they pull through. This is the magazine’s 90th issue, and it’s a great example of why it’s had such staying power through the years against rivals such as Dengeki Animaga and now Comp H’s; the latter is going to have to get its act together if it wants to be more than a Kadokawa / Kyoani shill and really compete against Megami on its good months, like this one. The usual batch of pictures below:

Magazine Review: Comp Heroines vol. 6

Volume six of the bimonthly Comptiq supplementary bishoujo poster magazine is here! Once again it’s heavy on the Lucky Star (not surprising coming from a Kadokawa publication); there’s also plenty of poster material from other (mostly summer) shows, and a couple of nice extras.

Protoculture News: Ayanami Rei on the cover of Rolling Stone

A bit late on this one, but as I was browsing at Melon Books after taking care of visa business in Takasaki today I noticed that they had the September 2007 issue of Rolling Stone magazine (Japan edition) on their magazine rack. It was plain to see why; along with an Al Gore interview (“ROCK MEETS ECO”) the new Evangelion movie was featured prominently in the issue. Rei with the world floating above her hand was probably meant to evoke the synthesis of the ecological theme with that of the Eva movie, but intentionally or not I’d say it serves the far more effective purpose of symbolizing the global hegemony Gainax is plotting to achieve via the Eva franchise (and Rei in particular). A full image of the magazine cover is below:

Figure News: Tony designed, T’s system sculpted E2 cover girl figure up for limited preorder

Bishoujo multimedia magazine E2 released its November issue yesterday, and Moeyo! Akibajin Blog reports that it contains information on acquiring a limited edition T’s System sculpted PVC figure based on an E2 cover illustration by Taka Tony. An unpainted version of the “bloomers girl” figure was on display at Gamers yesterday, which Moeyo also scoops; apparently the only way to obtain her is via mail order from this particular issue of E2 (for 4,800 yen + 500 yen shipping). This one looks so nice it’s a damn shame we won’t see her in wider release… (no more)

Figure News: Hobby Japan November ’07 news roundup (contains ero)

Megahouse Holstein Hanako-san castoff confirmed, Alpha Omega C.C. and Karen in color, Queen’s Blade Nix and Airi castoff configurations revealed, Queen’s Blade Reina action figure and cell phone game announced along with first interior shots of the newest QB character books, Gurren Lagann Yoko coming in resin from Wave, ero-ero Hobby Japan limited Jingai Makyou Didii figure mail order begins. Pictures below:

Manga News: Dengeki Black Maoh official site open, first issue on sale

Mentioned yesterday in the context of a new Queen’s Blade manga, word is in from Moon Phase that an official site is now open for the new MediaWorks quarterly serial magazine Dengeki Black Maoh, the first issue of which also goes on sale today. It’s being billed as “a bit adult, a bit ecchi comic magazine”, and the first issue features the launch of a new HoiHoi-san manga, in addition to a Shakugan no Shana spinoff manga called Shakugan no Shana Eternal Song, a Moetan manga, and the aforementioned Queen’s Blade Struggle. The next issue will be released in December, and is promised to contain further visual novel-based content; it’s unclear at this point where MediaWorks sees this magazine in relation to the other offerings currently in its lineup, but we’ll be keeping an eye on it as a possible contender with periodic releases such as Young Animal Island. Magazine Review: Megami vol. 89

Another month, another issue of Megami. We’re to the part of the year that can’t quite decide whether it’s summer or fall, and the posters this time seem equally confused (why don’t they just have Konata baking sweet potatoes by the fire in her school swimsuit?), but what may be lacking in poster content is made up for by a nice Itou Noiji pencilboard and a POP-illustrated Moetan “picture story”. Read on for the nitty gritty:

Figure News: Orchid Seed’s Fiine, Ikaru Satsuki, Ten’i PVCs up for preorder

Orchid Seed pulls to the head of the pack today as the first maker to bring a substantial portion of their Wonder Festival announced PVC lineup up for preorder (thus far on their official site only, other locations expected to have their listings up within the next day or two). Listings now online are the earlier scooped PVC version of their [ERO] Comic Unreal cover girl Fiine (Feane) kit, due out in December; [ERO] Seinarukana‘s Ikaru Satsuki, due out in November, and Ikkitousen‘s Ten’i, out in December as well. This winter is becoming crowded already… (no more)

Figure News: Orchid Seed presents Mogudan-designed Comic Unreal cover girl Onna Kenshi Fiine in PVC

Well, it was bound to happen. Precisely because I bought the resin kit, Orchid Seed turned around and announced at the “WONDERFUL HOBBY LIFE FOR Wholesaler & Retailers” expo today the PVCification of their (formerly Wanfesu limited) Onna Kenshi Fiine kit, based on the Mogudan illustrated cover of [ERO] Comic Unreal vol. 6. No release date has been disclosed, but the price has been set at 6,800 yen retail; I paid 9,800 for the (unpainted, unassembled) kit. This is good news, but AARGH. ;_; (no more)

[ERO] Figure News: Wafuudou Ganguten’s original Cerberus Project sculpted “Halloween Girl” PVC up for preorder

Scooped here originally back in June, word is in today from Hobby Stock that Wafuudou Ganguten‘s ero-ero Nano Naru designed, Cerberus Project sculpted “Halloween Girl” kit is now available for preorder. Hobby Stock notes that her asking price has been raised five hundred yen from the original Tech Gian listing to 7,980 yen retail; rather rich, but perhaps a suitable dietary replacement for all that candy when she comes out at the end of October.
