Figure News: scoops from the 2007 Plastic Model / Radicon Show

The 47th annual Plastic Model / Radicon Show is happening this weekend, and Moeyo! Akibajin Blog was there yesterday to check it out. While mostly devoted to plastic models (mecha and vehicles) and radio controlled devices (hence the name), bishoujo figures made a fair showing as well; the following can be deduced from Moeyo’s initial coverage:

Event News: Clayz Moero Matsuri scheduled for November 4th

Hobby Channel is reporting that figure maker Clayz will be holding their fourth annual “Moero Matsuri” in Akihabara on November 4th. It’s a small event held to showcase Clayz kits new and old, as well as to sell limited edition garage kits, PVCs, and this time a new cold cast version of the sculpted Sukumizu Pettan figure that debuted in resin at last year’s event. I went last year but didn’t manage to write up a report; if I have my wits together and can make it down to Tokyo I’ll try to do a more thorough job this time around. (no more)

Figure News: 1/1 scale Haruhi from Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi on display at TGS

GA Graphic is reporting that Bandai / Namco’s Banpresto corner has a 1/1 scale Suzumiya Haruhi model on display at this weekend’s Tokyo Game Show, there to advertise the upcoming PS2 game Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi (also coming from Banpresto). The game is set for release on January 31st of next year, and comes with a limited edition Figma Haruhi “hero version” action figure produced by Max Factory; no word on the fate of the 1/1 scale kit present at the event today, but presumably it’s a one-shot deal for promotional purposes only. [ERO] Game News: Dream Party Tokyo 2007 Fall dealers list announced

Dream Party, the biggest regular gathering of eroge makers outside Comiket‘s industry section, will be convening for its Tokyo fall iteration this year on October 14th, and the event’s official site has just posted a list of makers and vendors registered to participate. As I found on my visit to the event last spring it’s mostly a fund raiser for the makers to squeeze additional revenue out of character goods; pending further information I’ll probably give this one a miss, but we’ll keep an eye out for any news from the event as it approaches. Figure News: WHF Yokohama Dash 2 event coverage begins

The first coverage of yesterday’s WHF Yokohama Dash 2 garage kit sales event has come in from Hobby Channel in the form of a preliminary look at what circles had on display there. Of the batch presented here Zenko‘s Gurren Lagann Yoko caught my eye in particular; we’ll be updating this post with further information from the event as it appears, so stay tuned! Update: part 2 of Hobby Channel’s dealer coverage is now online. Also, Moeyo! Akibajin Blog’s coverage of the event can be found here. (no more)

Protoculture News: the doujin crackdown continues

Word came in on Friday from the organizational committee of Sunshine Creation (one of the largest Japanese doujinshi conventions after Comiket) that beginning with the 37th iteration of the event on October 8th staff will be checking the contents of each new book to go on sale there. This has long been standard practice at Comiket and other smaller doujin conventions, but the fact that in their official statement announcing the change Sankuri is tying the decision directly to the recent doujin arrest and other stifling developments on the 2D free speech scene is alarming. The statement refers multiple times to the changing environment surrounding doujinshi and a shifting definition of obscenity – this is the canary in the mine shaft of democracy, and if Japanese artists and responsible adult consumers don’t start standing up for their rights soon they’ll wake up one day to find they don’t have any. Further discussion of the urgent state of free speech in Japan can be found in this recent HD editorial. A translation of the September 7th statement from the Sunshine Creation executive office is below:

Pure Love Renaissance : C72 Omake! – Itasha

Shipon displays his stealthy cameraphone skillz and shows off some itasha he snapped at Comiket 72 and discovers that it’s not just hardened street racers who moe up their cars. There’s some soccer mums too…

Figure News: WONDERFUL HOBBY LIFE FOR Wholesaler & Retailers event roundup

The official Goodsmile blog has posted a two part ([1] [2]) report on the August 21st private event held to brief the people that matter (wholesalers and retailers) on the new products of ten PVC figure makers, away from the prying eyes of the sweatily jostling fannish masses. Most of the information is not new (aside from the inevitable PVCification of Orchid Seed’s Fiine), but for the fans of absurdly chested [ERO] figures it is instructive to note the pliable bosoms of Daiki Kougyou‘s production model Vispo sculpted Kotoyoshi Yumisuke designed Sanae. …it’s rather hard to follow that up with anything, isn’t it. Event Report: Comic Market 72, day 3

I was able to participate with a circle ticket on the third day of Comic Market 72 under the auspices of Xiarobo, and together with eima we traversed what has become a well-worn path to the Big Sight on the morning of the 19th. I never thought I’d reach this point, but with my tenth Comiket the thing is almost starting to feel habitual… – just when it shouldn’t, as the potential for the entire doujin scene to disappear in an instant lurks menacingly on the horizon. Reflections below:

Event News: Genshiken-only doujin convention planned for spring ’08

According to this post by pape over at Emo-teki na Hibi plans are in the works for the first ever Genshiken-only doujin convention! It’s scheduled to take place on May 5th, 2008 at the Taitou Kumin Kaikan building in Asakusa, and while there’s no official event page yet the level of detail in the announcement leads me to believe the space has already been reserved. I’m definitely going to be applying for great justice and OHNO LOVE – but May is so far away… ;_; Thanks to SDS for the heads up! (no more)

Goods News: charting the dakimakura boom

The Dakimakura Integrated Research Institute updated yesterday with a retrospective look at hug pillow presence over the past several Comic Markets, from 66 through the recently concluded C72, complete with graph (the pink line is industry presence, the blue is doujin circle presence). The graph measures the number of discreet units for sale, not the volume sold. According to site maintainer Okayama Ken the near doubling in industry presence is indicative of a rise in entrepreneurial zeal but not a corresponding rise in the quality of goods – in other words there’s a rush to cash in on what many are seeing as easy money, so buyer beware. Still, going by the numbers it’s a good time to be a fan of 2D girls on body-length pillowcases. (no more)

Pure Love Renaissance : Comiket 72 Cosplay!

Shipon rocks the camera-fu at Comiket cosplay on all three days – here are almost 100 photos from all 3 days of cosplay at this summer’s Comic Market at Tokyo Big Sight. Enjoy!

Pure Love Renaissance : Comic Market 72

Shipon deals out on his Comiket 72 experience covering sunburn, long lines, cosplay, an HD meetup, record numbers and how a good night’s sleep can make a BIG difference when a 5 hour lineup awaits.

Event Report: Comic Market 72, day 1

A quick rundown of the first day of Comic Market 72, from one man’s perspective (Shipon will be along later with a bunch of much nicer pictures, including cosplay, so be sure to stop back for that~). Day one verdict: fucking hot, but fun in hindsight.

Wonder Festival 2007 Summer: ero~i PVC news roundup

We wrap up our coverage of Wonder Festival 2007 Summer today (other than the trip report, which may end up coming next week) with a quick look at some of the other PVC releases that we’ll be looking forward to over the coming months. Wondering about that second Musubi from Movic, or what Bome’s next release will be? How about that bizarre new Max Factory Polo System kit? We’ve got you covered.

Wonder Festival 2007 Summer: garage kits galore

Everything that wouldn’t fit elsewhere in our Wonder Festival resin coverage is here, with kits ranging from originals to a wide variety of anime, manga, and game sources (Monster Hunter, Narue no Sekai, Juuden-chan, Ah! My Goddess, Kaibutsu Oujo, Idolmaster, Majipoka, Zero no Tsukaima, Kodomo no Jikan, AIKa 16, Yoake, Paniponi Dash, Range Murata, Venus vs. Virus, My Otome, Tokikake, Xenosaga, Muv Luv, Read or Die, Touhou, Littlewitch, Jigoku Shoujo, Nanoha, Witchblade, Genshiken, Manabi Straight, School Days, Keroro Gunsou, Super Robot Wars, Utawarerumono, Persona 3, Pumpkin Scissors, Ichigo Mashimaro, Fate / stay night, Simoun, Bakuretsu Tenshi, Onegai Teacher, Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei, Card Captor Sakura, Black Lagoon, Ikkitousen, Ouran Host Club, 009-1, and more!). Nothing explicitly ero, though several rather ecchi kits did make the cut; there are 269 pictures total, so please bear with the load time. ^^;;

Wonder Festival 2007 Summer: Orchid Seed, Yamato, Kotobukiya lineups

We take a look at the lineup of newly and recently announced items from Yamato, Orchid Seed, and Kotobukiya in this segment of our Wonder Festival coverage. Yamato and Orchid both have some [ERO] offerings in evidence, so browsing discretion is advised. :3

Wonder Festival 2007 Summer: garage kits by source

This post contains a bunch of garage kit shots from Wonder Festival broken down by source, including items from Evangelion, various fighting games, Gurren Lagann, Kimikiss, Queen’s Blade, Sengoku Rance, Rozen Maiden, and the To Heart franchises (mostly To Heart 2). Note: while this post is not tagged as [ERO], it does contain a few ero kits.

Wonder Festival 2007 Summer: Alter / Megahouse lineup

Alter and Megahouse both represented with some delicious items at Wonder Festival, offerings made all the more intriguing due to what seems to be a robust partnership emerging between the two companies spanning several projects over the coming months. Are they positioning themselves to rival the Goodsmile / Max Factory coalition (which Alter left behind only recently)? We’ll be watching… for now, the scoops:

Wonder Festival 2007 Summer: [ERO] garage kits

As usual, a considerable segment of the garage kits at this summer’s Wonder Festival were not at all safe for display at the workplace (or in most other locations). What follows is a sample of the new ero-ero resin kits we managed to spot at the event; note that we’re generally trying to avoid repeats from previous events so if something is missing that’s probably why. ^^;;

Wonder Festival 2007 Summer: Haruhi, Lucky Star garage kits

Haruhi’s not dead! With a second season of TV anime in the works, games for PSP and PS2 on the horizon and the manga and serial novels still running strong it’s no surprise that the Haruhi kit presence remained a potent force at this summer’s Wonder Festival. Lucky Star started its TV run after the circle application deadline was closed for this event so its small footprint is understandable – we can no doubt look forward to a much more substantial presence next winter.

Wonder Festival 2007 Summer: Goodsmile / Max Factory lineup

The Goodsmile / Max Factory collective was out in force at Wonder Festival, with dozens of past, present and future kit offerings on display. We’ve got a roundup of most of them here, including all of the new figures with officially speculated dates and several that were “display only” – lots of great stuff in the pipeline that it is highly advisable to click upon and peruse at your leisure!

Event Report: Wonder Festival 2007 Summer

Check this post for an updated compendium of all HD news on the topic of garage kit and figure convention Wonder Festival 2007 Summer, as well as the epic saga underlying our coverage of the event (coming soon!). Stuff will be added here regularly over the next several days, so you might want to bookmark this post or leave it open in a Firefox tab or something…

Wonder Festival 2007 Summer: Code Geass kits

We begin our Wonder Festival garage kit coverage today with a look at the array of Code Geass figures on display at the event. The popularity of the anime at the time circle applications were due last spring, along with Bandai’s relaxed restrictions, resulted in a bumper crop of really nice kits that I’m guessing we’re only going to be seeing more of in the future – great news for all the Geass fans out there.

Pure Love Renaissance : Wonder Festival Summer 2007

After meeting up with random people from both hemispheres in the tremendous line, we were all set to Wanfesu. Shingo and I had agreed on a system – he would stalk the resin and garage kits and I would shoot the new releases. I think I got the better end of the deal.

Wonder Festival Summer 2007: garage kit impressions

A few representative samples from the garage kit (amateur unpainted / unassembled resin cast figure kit) dealers hall at today’s Wonder Festival. Full scoops of Wanfesu garage kits, PVC figures, and cosplay will be coming soon, along with the HD official event report – stay tuned. :3

Figure News: Wonder Festival industry update IV

A few final Wonder Festival industry notes before the big event tomorrow, including Akiyama Koubou’s 1/1 scale Ayanami Rei, the surprise appearance of voice actresses from Kodomo no Jikan and Potemayo, and the world’s first ever tote bag made from a gym uniform. We’ll be bringing you coverage of all the Wanfesu action starting tomorrow night, so be sure to stop by and check it out!

Site News: Comiket 72 HDmeet is ON!

Friday August 17th, Tokyo Big Sight lobby, 3:00 PM. We’re planning to meet near the coin lockers adjacent to the main entrance of the Big Sight lobby and then head out en masse in search of some place to grab a bite of food and drink and socialization, and myself and Shipon would be honored if you’d keep us company! We’ll try to pinpoint a location ahead of time based on any response we might receive to this cunning plan, as spur-of-the-moment barbarian hordes are not handled particularly well by most Japanese drinking establishments; if it’s just going to be a few of us we can be more flexible, so please do try to contact us either here in comments or via email if it looks like you’ll be around. A map of the rendezvous point is below:

Figure News: Wave scoops their entire Wonder Festival release announcement lineup?

Wave’s Wonder Festival 2007 Summer page has been unexpectedly fleshed out with details on (and pictures of) what appear to be all of the upcoming items they’ll have on display there. The newly pictured bishoujo kits include a 1/8 scale Yoko from Gurren Lagann, the earlier-announced 1/10 scale Haruhi, Yuki, Tsuruya-san and Kyon’s sister from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, non-scale Bushido no Onna no Ko and Paladin no Onna no Ko from Sekaiju no Meikyuu, 1/10 scale Aisaka Taiga from Toradora!, 1/10 scale Louise from Zero no Tsukaima, 1/10 scale Buster Machine #7 from Top wo Nerae! 2, 1/10 scale Suzu from Nagasarete Airantou, 1/10 scale Amami Haruka from The Idolm@ster, 1/10 scale Tsuyuri from Doujin Work, and 1/8 scale Sendo Erika and subsequent character series from Fortune Arterial. We’ll be revisiting Wave’s lineup with photos and more detailed information after the event, but for now here’s something we can all salivate over in anticipation… here’s hoping the other makers present have similarly robust lineups in the offing!
