Kotobukiya announces gothic lolita Ayanami Rei

Figure maker Kotobukiya updated this afternoon with a vendor listing for a new Ayanami Rei (gothic lolita “noir” version) PVC figure from Neon Genesis Evangelion. She’s set for release in October at 7,140 yen and 1/7 scale (height unspecified), with a sculpt from Nishimura Naoki (Pilot). She’s designed to match Kotobukiya’s earlier released gothic lolita Asuka, and her hat is removable. Images below:

Alter does Evangelion Rei, P3 Elizabeth, Onee Chanbara Aya

Figure maker Alter updated their official site this morning with listings for three new figures scheduled to appear in their October ’08 release lineup! The first is Ayanami Rei, heroine of the Eva franchise (here credited as being from the new movie, though it’s hard to tell). Her sculpt is from Numakura Toshiaki, and she’s set for release at 1/8 scale (17 cm long) and 6,090 yen retail. Next up is Elizabeth from Persona 3 FES, with a sculpt from Saitou Fumiki. She’s also due out at 6,090 yen and 1/8 scale (22 cm tall). Finally there’s Aya, from Onee-Chanbara VorteX. She’s due out at 1/7 scale (25 cm tall) and 8,190 yen, with a sculpt from Takeuchi Goutarou (Atelier Bamboo). None of the three appear to be significantly castoffable. Images below:

Revoltech Yotsuba Summer DX, bandage Rei preorders

As reported last night, preorders opened today at 1:00 PM for Kaiyodo’s Revoltech action figure series Yotsubato! summer vacation DX set and Fraeulein Ayanami Rei (bandage version). Both are sculpted by Enoki Tomohide (Eyewater), as variants of previous Revoltech releases (the original Yotsuba and Fraeulein Ayanami). They’re both scheduled for release on August 1st, with Yotsuba accompanied by three face parts, seven hand parts and a cicada, a hat, a bag, an ice cream, a bug-catching net, a bug box, a base, and an extra joint. Rei comes wtih the Lance of Longinus, an extra head, three hands, and a base. Yotsuba retails for 2,600 yen at 12 cm tall, while Rei comes in at 2,200 yen and 15 cm tall.

In related news, Kaiyodo’s Yotsubato! Fuuka PVC is also scheduled for reissue on August first, as is their original Fraeulein #1 Ayanami Rei. Images of the new Yotsuba and bandage Rei below:

Figure Review: Yamashita Shunya’s Ayanami Rei

The combination of a Yoshizawa Mitsumasa sculpt and a Yamashita Shunya design is enough to evoke a Pavlovian drooling response in many figure collectors, myself among them. Formerly available exclusively in limited resin kit form, the announcement from Yamato at last summer’s Wonder Festival that the Yamashita / Yoshizawa team’s coproduced Ayanami Rei would be coming in PVC was incredibly welcome news. Following shortly on the heels of other significant Yamato releases last December Rei was lost in the shuffle here at HD, but we’re happy to finally be able to bring you a review of this great figure!

December 21st 2007 figure news roundup (updated)

A whole lot of action on the figure front to sum up today, including a continuation of Cerberus Project’s collaboration with Wafuudou Ganguten, a faux trap figure from Toy’sworks that’s almost Bridgetlicious, a bunny Haruhi + guitar prize figure, a review of the Haruhi itasha model first seen back at the Miyazawa Model exhibition, a step-by-step tour through a Nakoruru castoff, a couple of new angles on Alter’s Kanu, and a Keumaya update. Check it out! Update: Keumaya’s new items up at Toranoana, Revoltech Fraeulein Asuka and Play Stationery Rin up for preorder!

Figure News: Movic’s Ayanami Rei, Shueisha’s Akashiya Moka preorders open, Piccolo launches painted resin line

Some noteworthy bits of figure news in this evening, starting with word from Amiami that Movic’s Ayanami Rei PVC (the standard plug suit version we scooped back at the Miyazawa Model Exhibition) is now up for preorder, with release expected in February at 5,250 yen, 1/8 scale, and a sculpt from Hiroshi of Sakurazensen. Moving on: previous looks at Shueisha’s Akashiya Moka PVC from Rosario to Vampire weren’t that inspiring, but now that’s she’s up for preorder she’s looking much nicer. She’s coming to us from the new “Shueisha Solid Selection” brand in late May, at 1/8 scale and 5,000 yen retail. Finally, character goods maker Piccolo made news today with the unveiling of Kaze no Stigma‘s Kannagi Ayano and Samurai 7‘s Kirara in a new line of figures they’re calling “Reijin CAST”. They’re prepainted resins (the name is a pun as reijin 麗人 means “beautiful woman”), and both retail in March at 1/8 scale (8,925 yen for Kirara and 9,975 yen for Ayano). (no more)

Figure News: Kotobukiya’s Katsuragi Misato, Komaki Ikuno PVCs up for preorder

Kotobukiya has updated its official release info page with data on two new PVC releases coming down the pipe in March 2008, and both are now up for preorder at Hobby Stock: first is Evangelion‘s Katsuragi Misato (scooped here), clocking in at 1/6 scale and 7,140 yen retail. Second is Komaki Ikuno from To Heart 2, who is 1/8 scale and comes with a functional wheelchair at 6,090 yen retail. Both have charm points to recommend them, Misato for being Misato and generally underserved when it comes to figures, and Ikuno for her wheelchair (which is sort of sad, but you know that thing is going to be used in all sorts of creative ways). High resolution galleries of both below:

Figure News: 07/11/09 evening preorders

Amiami has another decent batch of preorders up tonight, including Toys Planning’s Miyamura Miyako PVC from ef who clocks in at 20 cm tall and is due out in January at 6,500 yen; Movic’s Corticarte Apa Lagranges (adult ver.) PVC from Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica, due out in January at 5,880 yen and 1/8 scale (21 cm tall); an Ayanami Rei cold cast from Evangelion (in white and black bikini versions) from Aizu Project, due out in February at 1/8 scale and 12,600 yen; and a Tsumura Tokiko PVC from Busou Renkin, due out from Organic in December at 1,890 yen and 12 cm tall. Figure News: Kaiyodo’s Revoltech Fraeulein Ayanami Rei action figure up for preorder on November 1st

In continuing coverage of Revoltech’s Fraeulein series of bishoujo action figures, the maker’s official blog reported and online figure shop Digitamin confirms that the first item in the series lineup, Ayanami Rei of Evangelion, will be up for preorder on November 1st with release scheduled for January 1st, 2008. In anticipation of the release Digitamin has created a product entry complete with a full image gallery exhibiting Rei in many of the poses made possible by the figure; this initial offering in the lineup goes on sale at 2,000 yen, with subsequent figures (Fate’s Rin and Eva’s Asuka are confirmed) priced at 2,200 yen. While Revoltech figures are regularly reissued to meet demand, those interested getting in on this first batch of Rei are advised to get their preorders in early as she’s likely to be a very hot item. November 1st Update: as of 6:00 PM this evening she is now available for preorder around the internet. (no more)

Figure News: Wave Angel XX Nano series updated with three new figures

Wave is releasing a series of Angel XX Nano super-deformed figures to complement their already established Angel XX line, figures based loosely on the Angel designs from Evangelion and designed by illustrator Yoshizaki Mine. The XX nano page was updated today with listings for three new petit figures, Tabris XX Nano, Zeruel XX Nano, and Leliel XX Nano. They’re all due out in March of 2008, presumably at the same 1,890 yen price point as the earlier installments of the series (Sachiel and Lilith are due out in November). I’m really liking the look of the Leliel design myself. :3 (no more)

Figure News: Kaiyodo’s Revoltech Fraeulein action figure line heats up

Kaiyodo’s official Revoltech Express blog has been preaching the gospel of the brand’s new Fraeulein lineup of action figures for the past few days, introducing a prototype sculpt of Fraeulein #2 Tousaka Rin along with several pictures of Fraeulein #1 Ayanami Rei, including some rather wacky offerings today. Official information on the Ayanami release can be found in this entry, which pegs her at a January 1st, 2008 release at 2,000 yen (first lot limited, subsequent editions will be 2,200 yen). She’s 15 cm tall (~1/10 scale), with 18 points of articulation, 10 “revolver joints”, four alternate hands and the Lance of Longinus included. Apparently Kaiyodo is shooting for Fraeulein releases monthly on the first of each month; an ambitious production schedule, but great news for fans of bishoujo action figures. We’ll be keeping an eye out for preorders. (no more)

Figure News: Evangelion’s Katsuragi Misato coming in PVC from Kotobukiya

Great news today for the legions of Misato fans out there (and for those of us sick and tired of endless parades of Rei and Asuka): Kotobukiya has announced on their official blog that a PVC of Misato is currently in production! No details regarding price or release date are yet forthcoming, but given that they’re only showing us an unpainted resin prototype we may end up seeing her street around the time the next Eva movie hits theaters. Protoculture News: Ayanami Rei on the cover of Rolling Stone

A bit late on this one, but as I was browsing at Melon Books after taking care of visa business in Takasaki today I noticed that they had the September 2007 issue of Rolling Stone magazine (Japan edition) on their magazine rack. It was plain to see why; along with an Al Gore interview (“ROCK MEETS ECO”) the new Evangelion movie was featured prominently in the issue. Rei with the world floating above her hand was probably meant to evoke the synthesis of the ecological theme with that of the Eva movie, but intentionally or not I’d say it serves the far more effective purpose of symbolizing the global hegemony Gainax is plotting to achieve via the Eva franchise (and Rei in particular). A full image of the magazine cover is below:

Figure News: Yamato’s Yamashita Sunya designed, Yoshizawa Mitsumasa sculpted Ayanami Rei PVC from Evangelion up for preorder

First scooped by HD at Wonder Festival this summer, Yamato‘s Creator’s Labo #015 Rei Ayanami PVC figure went up for preorder this evening at Amiami and should be up shortly elsewhere as well. This rather liberal interpretation of Evangelion‘s Ayanami design was penned by Yamashita Shunya and rendered in resin by Yoshizawa Mitsumasa (original kit here), with Yamato’s PVC version scheduled to street this December at 26 cm tall (1/6 scale?) and 7,140 yen retail. Rei purists may shy away, but given the countless other appealing aspects of this kit I’m guessing it’ll be quite a popular item. (no more)

[ERO] Game News: Honki Jiru’s Bokura no Ikinari Dousei Keikaku site launched, bears no resemblance to Evangelion whatsoever

The twelve years since the original airing of Evangelion coincide with the period of eroge’s rise to prominence as a game genre in Japan, and several times over that span the venerable anime franchise has been drawn upon as a source of inspiration by the seamier side of PC gaming (perhaps most notably in Season of the Sakura / Sakura no Kisetsu). Thus it is refreshing to finally see the genre maturing to the point where anime references can be cast aside, and games brought forward on the merits of their own unique, original stories and designs. Maker Honki Jiru’s newest title Bokura no Ikinari Dousei Keikaku is a shining example of this progress, with a cast of original characters and a story not at all reminiscent of Shinji moving in with Misato. Seriously. Just because he’s moving to work in a “research lab” it doesn’t mean his estranged father is going to be there too, right? Right? Release of this entirely original and non-derivative game is expected on December 7th. (no more)

Figure News: Okama-designed Evangelion Asuka and Rei (witch ver.) prize figures coming from Sega

News in from figure shop Waku-Waku Wonder today that a pair of Okama-designed Evangelion Asuka and Rei (witch ver.) prize figures will be coming from Sega in February of next year at 2,480 yen for the pair. While all we have to go on at this point is the Okama illustration and word that they’ll be 16 cm tall, they’ll probably resemble his earlier Eva / Sega prize figure work in production quality; we also know that the sculpt will be handled by OSIRIS of production unit Heavy Gauge, who has quite a distinguished recent repertoire to his name. Preorders should be showing up elsewhere soon! (no more)

Figure Review: Evangelion’s Ayanami Rei on a soft drink cup

As I was preparing to go watch the new Eva movie a couple of weeks ago I came across the news that the theater I’d be going to was offering a special limited edition snack menu along with the film: your choice of either Eva Unit 1 or Rei perched jauntily atop a drink cup, along with said drink (of medium size) and a bag of popcorn (either sugared or salted) all for the low, low price of 1,200 yen! While I’m not much of an Eva collector the absurdity of the commodification in this case struck me as something I couldn’t pass up on, so here you have it: Rei on a drink cup.

Figure News: Kotobukiya’s Shiina, Silfa, Nijihara and Pastel Inks, Koakuma Louise, and “theater version” Rei up for preorder

Kotobukiya made a splash yesterday evening with the preorder listings of a whole gang of new figures, including Shining Wind’s Shiina Kanon, To Heart 2 Another Days’ Silfa, Moetan’s Nijihara Ink and Pastel Ink (TV color version reissues), Zero no Tsukaima’s Louise (koakuma ver.), and Evangelion’s Rei (plug suit ver.). They’re all due to street in December and sort of blur together in my mind in a big lump, though the Rei does stand out (perhaps due to viewing under the influence). My brain tells me that the road to Eva goods collection is paved with financial death, but my itchy preorder finger is hovering over the button… ;_; (no more)

Movie Review: Evangelion Shin Gekijouban: Jo (EVANGELION 1.0: YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE)

With Hideaki Anno‘s proclamation back in February that the new Rebuild of Evangelion movies would be all things to all people, present a panacea to the ills of a languishing anime industry, and sate old fans while bringing new ones into the fold, curiosity was high as I entered the theater this morning. Would the new Evangelion surpass the original, managing to heave its ponderous bulk above the weight of twelve years of mainstream merchandising – or would the temptation to stick an IV into the goose laying golden eggs prove to be too strong? Signs point to morbidly obese poultry…

Then again, Shipon wants to have a word with you. That’s right, there are two reviews right here in a single post! And they said it couldn’t be done… Note: most spoilers are clearly marked, but peruse at your own risk.
