Goods News: Genshiken to be novelized

Thanks to SDS for the heads up on this: according to the recently updated Genshiken anime site, the tale of otaku life and love in a college “modern visual culture” club is set to receive novel treatment. Writing duty for the book’s original story has been passed to Iida Kazutoshi, director of independent game maker Artdink whose past work includes Doshin the Giant and Aquanaut’s Holiday. I’m not sure how this qualifies him to pen a Genshiken novel, but perhaps designing quirky niche games grants one mystical powers… the book is entitled Hainyuu Ranjin no Yabou ~Return of the OTAKU~ and is scheduled for release from Kodansha on January 23rd at 940 yen; the first part of the name translates roughly as “the ambition/treachery of the Dutch pilgrims”, which makes absolutely no sense to me at this point but will hopefully be clarified in due time. Shimoku Kio seems to have given the project his blessing, so I’ll probably pick the book up to see what all the fuss is about… (no more)

Anime News: Genshiken 2 OP unveiled, Urushihara Satoshi stars

The second episode of Genshiken 2 aired last night, and unlike the first episode it features the OP animation and opening theme song in all its glory – frankly it’s nothing like what I was expecting, and it blew me away. The entire OP sequence is directed by veteran animator and eromangaka Urushihara Satoshi, and unlike the original Manzo OP which centers around the club enjoying their daily activities this one soars into the realm of otaku myth, transposing characters into the roles of giant robot heroes. The OP theme song itself does the job fine, but what really knocks you off your feet is the animation. I can’t believe they had the budget to do this. It’s not up on YouTube yet, but Nico has it here (registration required); screencap of the Urushihara credit below:

Event News: Genshiken-only doujin convention official site online

While working on our fall anime post earlier today I looked up the Genshiken-only doujin event we scooped here back in August, only to find that its official site is now online! Dubbed The First ‘Genshiken and Kujibiki Unbalance were interesting’ Conference (“Gen-An Kaigi” for short), the event will take place on May 5th, 2008 at the Taitou building of the Tokyo Industry Trade Center in Asakusa. As the name suggests both Genshiken and Kujian books are welcome for submission, with circle participation limited to 60 circles and direct sales only (no consignment). This sounds like a small number compared to the 30,000+ circles at Comiket, but on the other hand the prospect of 60 new Genshiken / Kujian books is a superb one indeed. :3 We’ll be keeping track of this as the event approaches. As an aside, the very fetching top page illustration for the event is by Kabaya Kousuke. (no more)

Anime News: Genshiken 2 web radio to start broadcast on October 9th

Animate.tv brings us the news that Genshiken 2 web radio will begin streaming on October 9th, coinciding with the TV show‘s terrestrial broadcast. The radio program will be anchored by Hiyama Nobuyuki (Madarame) and Mizuhashi Kaori (Ogiue), who will engage in philosophical discussions that will deepen (or not deepen) their understanding of otaku life. Corners include Mizuhashi’s “Fujoshi no Hanazono”, where she listens to and resolves the concerns of female otaku listeners, and Hiyama’s “Koko ga Hen da yo Ippanjin!”, where otaku turn the tables and point on the bizarre behaviors of “normal people”. The show will be called “Genchoken Otaku na Radio” (Genchoken = Gendai Choukaku Bunka Kenkykuukai, or the society for the study of modern audio culture), and will stream new episodes every Tuesday consistent with the broadcast of the TV show. This is going to be fun… :3 (no more)

Anime News: Genshiken 2 official site updated, promo video online, first episode streams this Friday

The official site for season two of the Genshiken anime has been updated today with all sorts of awesome goodness, including a TV broadcast schedule, new character introductions (Sue and Angela) and cast interviews, OP and ED single release information, and last but not least a promotional video which may or may not be the same as the one that ran at Comiket 72. In addition the first episode of the series will be streaming at Bandai Channel starting Friday September 14th (this week!). In related news, it was announced recently that Genshiken spinoff game Ramen Tenshi Pretty Menma will be seeing a manga adaptation in Comic Alive starting in its November ’07 edition (on sale September 27th), written by Kio Shimoku and illustrated by manga newcomer Shiroi Norio. Our earlier coverage of the staff and casting details of Genshiken 2 can be found here. (no more)

Anime News: Genshiken season 2 screen shots, production details scooped

Via Moon Phase: Famitsu has put up a feature on the second season of the Genshiken anime, scheduled to air this October. It includes the first proper screen shots of the show that we’ve seen online, as well as details on the staff, cast, and Ramen Tenshi Pretty Menma spinoff (though no info as to its release format). A few interesting items of note: the show is being directed by Yoshimoto Kinji, a long time collaborator of Urushihara Satoshi‘s known primarily for his work on Plastic Little. Series composition is being handled by Yokote Michiko, who was responsible for the first series as well; script duty is credited to her and Shimoku Kio. Character designs are from Yanagida Yoshiaki, who did the Kujibiki Unbalance TV anime designs as well as those of the Genshiken OVA. The OP will be performed by Misato Aki, with the ED by Yuumao. Sue will be voiced by Gotou Yuuko (of Mikuru fame), and Angela will be voiced by Kaida Yuki. Man, I’m starting to get psyched for this… :D (no more)

Anime News: Genshiken season 2 trailer online

This trailer was first shown at Media Factory‘s industry booth at Comiket 72, but now it’s RIGHT HERE, courtesy of the magic of YouTube (and SDS, who once again rules in the realm of Genshiken spottings). Points of note after a first viewing: the illustration of Kujian‘s Ritsuko Kyuubel Kettenkrad (Kaichou) taped to the clubroom door has returned to the original Yagumo Kengou OVA design, cause for much rejoicing. Also, while it’s admittedly too early to say from the brief clips presented here it seems they’ve tightened the quality control and are staying on model substantially more than in the first season. Ogiue and Ohno are looking great! めっちゃ楽しみだわ~ Embedded YouTube below:

Event News: Genshiken-only doujin convention planned for spring ’08

According to this post by pape over at Emo-teki na Hibi plans are in the works for the first ever Genshiken-only doujin convention! It’s scheduled to take place on May 5th, 2008 at the Taitou Kumin Kaikan building in Asakusa, and while there’s no official event page yet the level of detail in the announcement leads me to believe the space has already been reserved. I’m definitely going to be applying for great justice and OHNO LOVE – but May is so far away… ;_; Thanks to SDS for the heads up! (no more)

Anime News (?): Genshiken season 2 spinoff game “Ramen Tenshi Pretty Menma” unveiled

A page went up last Thursday for an (all ages?) adventure game entitled Ramen Tenshi Pretty Menma. It’s apparently being produced in conjunction with the second season of Genshiken, set to air in October; the relationship between the two is at this point unknown, as the game was never mentioned in the original manga; my initial speculation is that it’s not much more than an attempt to leverage the popularity of the Genshiken brand to make a quick buck on an unrelated property (*cough*Kujian TV*cough*) the game is mentioned on page 130 of Genshiken vol. 3 as being the first eroge Sasahara ever played [source]. I wonder if this means it’ll be 18+ after all? Designs are from veteran CG artist Amano Yo~ki, who’s been around for long enough that he certainly could’ve designed Sasahara’s first game… we’ll be keeping a close eye on this and relay further information as it comes to light. Figure Review: Alter’s Ogiue Chika PVC (Kujian cosplay ver.) from Genshiken

When this figure was first announced I wasn’t sure I would pick it up. It’s not Ohno, after all, and I felt that betrayal to my one and only love would be sacrilegious; however the needs of a Genshiken completionist ultimately rose to the fore, and I’m glad they did. Read on for a look at a very nice figure indeed!

Anime News: Genshiken 2, Doujin Work, Kimikiss, AIKa R-16, To Heart 2 OVA updates

Yesterday brought several site updates for shows we’re keeping an eye on, including a revamped Genshiken official site with basic information on the second season (and the awesome splash image that Hobby Stock scooped earlier), a Doujin Work official site update with info on the release of manga vol. 4, the on air schedule, and shots of the OP and ED theme covers (July 25th release!), and the official Kimikiss game site has been updated with info on the upcoming anime, subtitled “pure rouge”. In other news, the AIKa R-16 official site has been updated with stills from the July 27th release of the OVA’s second volume, and Aquaplus’s To heart 2 OVA has a promo video up at Animate.tv for its second episode, due out on June 27th. Anime News: Genshiken 2, Doujin Work, Ikkitousen OVA stills from Media Factory online at Hobby Stock

Via Moetry: Hobby Stock has posted the results of a trip they took to Media Factory‘s animation HQ, coming away with some great new images from some of the projects they’re currently working on. First up is a superb bit of Genshiken season 2 production art, looking very much like a Kio Shimoku original piece… dokidoki. Next up are several stills from Doujin Work, the first to make it online, and finally a few shots from the ero-ero Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny onsen OVA to be included with the limited edition release of volume 1 of the TV anime (on sale June 22nd). There are some Zero no Tsukaima 2 images up as well, but I believe they’re all the same ones that Famitsu had up in its earlier coverage. I’m still blinded by the magnificent new Ohno artwork, may take a bit to recover… (no more)

Anime News: Genshiken Season 2 – this time it’s for real!

The official Genshiken website was updated today with the news that a second season of the anime is in fact in the works, scheduled to air this fall.

…holy shit. Holy shit. HOLY SHIT. There are no words, just incoherent sound as I try to express the immense wave of excitement washing over me right now.

Perhaps the daily votive offerings of bald, bearded yaoi doujinshi at my (as yet unfinished) Ohno shrine have paid off after all… needless to say we’ll be following this very, VERY closely over the coming months. (no more… yet)
