From all the Japanese cartoon series i’ve seen here, only Sailormoon is what i knew.

I LOVE this show so much when i was a kid.
All of the characters are very pretty and very well created.
I love Jupiter among all.
She’s very simple to look at.
An I can’t wait to see them again on TV’s

Sailor Moon a live action version not too long ago, but I do agree a new series without all the filler that stuck a bit closer to the manga would be fantastic. The problem with this is that magical girl series are meant to be 90% filler, so I don’t think companies would like to do a condensed version.
BTW mahou shojo is not dead, there’s pretty cure seasons all over the place.

Forget bubblegum crisis (it’s got 2040 already), how about some GUNSMITH CATS? and not like the ovas, something full of all the sexy raunchy action the manga has.

Sailor moon has had a live action show air in japan and had a relatively successful launch. Its still a card that could be dealt if a audience was established and the concept refined. MMO and that other group really dont count to be do to the fact that their stuff is low key and and no quality.

Thanks for a very well written article! I have myself had thoughts along these lines now and then.
I would very much like to see a well-done updated version of Urusei Yatsura, which was responsible for taking me to otakudom long, long time ago. It would not need to be some continuation of original story, it could very well be a slice of life 13 eps. series inserted somewhere in the middle of original TV series. Preferably with more fanservice with those moe-nized (but voluptuous)chara designs, as there already is a plenty of useful female characters.

Just to point out here, unless I missed something in the above text (likely), there was an attempt to revive Bubblegum Crisis as BGC 2040 ten years ago, and a fairly successful attempt at redoing Dirty Pair as Dirty Pair Flash (’94 to ‘96). Assuming these count.

Would love to see a 3×3 Eyes anime. it only had a pathetic few episode OVA release for a manga series that span 54 volumes. Lots of action nice character development that should have enough material for a standard 24 episode series.

Would also like to see a continuation of the Patlabour series. One of my fav mecha series. It did not have over the top mecha, but featured more beleivable stuff set in the present. The story also left room for futher addition storylines. Or they could feature a new cast of characters that take over the old characters (ie: like set maybe 5-10 years afte the last series)

The absence of a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure TV adaptation is one of the great mysteries of anime. You almost have to suspect massive creative feuds or legal problems (not that I've ever heard anything credible along those lines). I occasionally daydream about the possibilities for a UY revival--new moe designs, CG to recreate the iridescent color of Lum's hair implied in the manga--and I wouldn't be too surprised if it happened. Tetsuwan Birdy is actually much better than it looks like it should be. At least, the original OVA is; the TV incarnations are relatively bland, from what I've seen.

Just to add, Seiya, I too want to see a full version remake of the Video Girl manga, just like the treatment Aaa,Megami-sama received in it’s glorious 2 season tv remake. That was so much better and complete compared to the tease of the 1993 5-episode OVA and 2002 movie with the silly plot that takes the character development backward to day 1.

That 6 episode OVA of VGAi with the changed ending is not satisfying. Still, that show has my favourite songs and soundtracks. And yeah, Masakazu Katsura the manga artist can sing quite well too. I still listen to them on my ipod. 8)

I’m not surprised. If anime works that pre-date my birth or teenage years (before 1980) got remade/redone, much more recent works with the bigger fan numbers should entice a company to churn out more to cash in.

e.g. Gatchaman; Cutie Honey (at least 3 remakes with 1 live action movie, even the original spelling of Cutey was modernised…); Captain Harlock with naked Yumi fan service within the 1st 5 minutes of the 1st episode of the 13 episode OVA)

Dirty Pair already had a remake. But I find the original much much better in terms of character design/fan service.

Need I say more? 8)

p.s. I’m definitely looking forward to the Queen’s Blade anime. Apparently, what’s hinted at/covered up in the official art book (unofficial/fan-based comiket stuff not counted) will be shown in their full animated glory, if the pre-view clip is anything to go by. If even more yuri-risque than Ikkitosen. 8D

Nanoha and the mahou shoujo genre shouldn’t be counted as down and out. Nanoha The MOVIE 1st, if its still set for release, opened up the possibility of Nanoha movies and OVAs for years to come. Assuming its popularity will carry it that far.

There may not be as many traditional mahou shoujo series as there were during the 90’s but shows such as Strike Witches carry elements of the genre without the use of transformation sequences/devices, mascot characters, and other staples. Series such as Someday’s Dreamers, including the recently aired second season, even take the genre to new maxims by adding additional doses of drama to create amalgamations which still hold true to the magical girl fundamentals. In short, mahou shoujo is far too variable a genre to completely lose its viability. If it ever does, we’ll at least have parodies like Moetan, Punie-chan, NW Komugi, etc to carry us fans through.

It’s amazing to see how people think of the same thing from the vast majority of works in all these years. Nadesico has to be one of them.

3×3 EYES was quite a surprising one, in terms that I totally forgot about it, and also that it is a better source for adaptation than many of the shows from recent years.

I want to list Hoshin Engi as another one. The manga was fantastic, but I didn’t like the TV adaptation. Only if they can remake it…
