After several release delays, Orchid Seed’s Mogudan-inspired Comic Unreal cover girl Onna Kenshi Feane is finally here! Unlike most kits this is one that proved to be in almost every respect better than the production shots available in the past – if Orchid delays mean more figures of this quality, I’m all for them. Read on for a detailed look at the first figure that can truly lay claim to embody the spirit – and the monumental bosoms – of Mogudan’s art.

Feane is an original character created by doujin artist, professional illustrator and character designer Mogudan to grace the cover of volume 6 of the monthly eromanga serial magazine Comic Unreal. The issue came out in March of 2007, and a scant few months later we saw her brought to life as a garage kit at Wonder Festival 2007 Summer, and announced for PVC production shortly thereafter. She was originally scheduled for release in December of 2007, but in what has become the standard routine for Orchid Seed her release was subsequently delayed to this month (March ’08).

Sculpt
Ishiyama Satoshi has time and again proven his prowess at sculpting the pleasant masses of characters created by the likes of Inoue Takuya, and Mogudan fits into that repertoire like a missing puzzle piece. Ishiyama’s usual sculpting weakness lies in the face, mouthes and jaw lines in particular, but in this case I was happy to find the trademark “slit mouth” not nearly as pronounced. From some angles the face looks more Mogudan than any of the sample images of the kit I’d seen before, which was a nice surprise.
In all other respects the kit is essentially close to a perfect conversion of Mogudan’s illustration. The only thing I could wish for would be that it was a bit larger; a true 1/6 scale (this is advertised as such but is much closer to 1/7) or even a 1/5 would be awesome, and really lend the character the feeling of mass she deserves. Here’s hoping we see a maker rise to that challenge soon.
Production
Cast
This is a very nice casting job with generally solid detail work and few obvious mold lines or seams. The most evident imperfection is the mold line around her right shoulder, armpit, and breast, and the seam where her replaceable top meets the skin, but these aren’t visible from most vantage points. Even the usually telltale seam between the bangs and the bulk of the hair is skillfully hidden by a slight overhang on the bang piece – testament to both the quality sculpt and faithful replication in casting.
The only other potential casting issue is the left hand, which looks somewhat ungainly up close, but that’s par for the course for a figure of this size. And hey, the sword is removable! They could’ve cast it as one piece with the scabbard quite easily but decided to go beyond the call of duty – high five to the Orchid folks for that.
Paint
The paint job on Feane ranges from decent to outstanding. The gloss lacquer-style finish on her boots and top is industry-leading quality, given lavish attention in shading, and the contrast with the matte finish on her tights combined with the shading to give them contour is the single most effective element of the kit, in my opinion. Detail work is universally solid, rising to the demands of duplicating the original illustration admirably. The elements of the paint job that fail to rise above adequate for me are the skin and the hair, both of which seem a bit too solid matte for Mogudan’s style – especially in this illustration, where if you look closely you can see that she’s sweating a bit. A bit more shading and a more creative finish on the skin and hair would’ve made her one of the best colored kits in a long time.
Conclusion
Orchid Seed’s Comic Unreal cover girl Onna Kenshi Feane is a great kit, no question. A few minor blemishes in the sculpt, casting and paint job are hardly demerits in the face of everything done so completely right in Feane’s production; if you’re a Mogudan fan I can’t imagine not picking this up, and if you’re not a Mogudan fan there’s something wrong with you that means there’s more left over for us. :3 The few areas of improvement left here I see as an opportunity for Orchid or another enterprising maker (Daiki, perhaps?) to step in with an even more stupendous Mogudan-inspired sculpt. Here’s hoping!
Overall Score: 9/10
+ dynamite original Mogudan design
+ Ishiyama delivers one of his best, most faithful sculpts ever
+ amazing coloring on the boots, tights, and top
o “1/6 scale” actually closer to 1/7
o coloring on the skin and hair doesn’t impress
– Mogudan hasn’t updated his site in almost two months :(
– likelihood of figure based on his other Unreal vol. 6 Feane illustration is virtually zero
If you’d like to support HD with your purchase, Feane is currently available at Play-Asia!
Another excellent review Shingo! I’m very impressed on the likeness of the final product to Mogudan’s “cover illustration”… O_O
The only worry I have in buying the Feanne figure is that it might lean over time, since the figure stands on one leg with that “top-heavy” bearing… ^_^;
Leaning is a worry, though the figure seems quite well balanced to me – the pose is such that the weight is evenly distributed, and it seems unlikely that she would lean in a particular direction. The next few months of summer heat will no doubt put that to the test, though…. ^^;;
Too chunky for my tastes. More money saved to be spent on Kurushima Kanu. Yay!
Nice!! Very nice PVC- I got the resin a while back and money is stupid tight right now so I’ll have to pass- but man…..I hope to see more full body figures in the future from more sources outside of Orchid Seed.
Thanx alot Shingo!! I’m glad she lived up to the delays.
I like it, but I’m saving for some upcoming figures. Nice pictures as always . . .
Nice to see another figure review, Shingo. Although her assets are just a WEE bit oversize for my tastes, I agree with L.C on how faithful she is to the artwork on which she is based, one of the most important criteria for me in my figure collecting.
Once the month of May arrives (ahem…Chuchu Asutoramu), I will be a very happy figure collector.

I shall abscond with your share of the world’s chunky figures in your absence. :3 Though I agree, Kurushima’s Kanu is definitely a prize worth sacrificing for.
>>Work_Ethic
I got the resin too… argh. Even less likely to be painted now. ;_; I do hope at the very least that Ishiyama is inspired to continue sculpting more Mogudan-based designs.

Saving for other figures is always a worthy cause. If only they weren’t so hard to prioritize. :(

I don’t think such assets are advisable in real life, but in fiction and figures there’s no such thing as back pain. :3 I can certainly understand the variation in aesthetic preferences, though.
Chu Chu Astram is a great choice! I hope Goodsmile delivers on schedule.
Wow, I really wish I had mine right now! I’ve
waited so long for this figure…
Glad to hear it is faithful to Mogudan’s original illustration. I can only wish that it will be the first in a series of them ^__^;;
Very nice review Shingo, I’m really glad I ordered it. I didn’t know she came with another top but now I wish they had found a better way of attaching it so we could admire her charms when we wish.
Nice to see a resumption of your figure review section with a great figure. Waiting impatiently for mine.
Yeah, money’s pretty tight now. So those figure delays are actually alright with me. Here’s hoping the US$ strengthen against the Yen in the meantime.
And also hoping Mogudan is alright too, and that he’s too busy with work to update his site, that’s all. 8)
So this is based off of some of Mogudan’s work? I thought it looked familiar when I pre-ordered it. Now I just need to wait for it to get here.
Great review! I was planning on picking her up, I’ve liked Orchid Seed’s offerings so far, and seeing your pics and what you thought about Feane sealed the deal here.
Got a question for anybody though, anyone used ToysLogic before? Saw the link for them on the sidebar and they’ve got pretty good prices and low shipping… so it made the “too good to be true” alarm go off in me. Are they refutable?
I still think Mogudan is overrated :P

I’m with you, I hope this is the first in a long series of Unreal cover girls from Orchid/Ishiyama Satoshi!
>>Al
Yeah, it would’ve made my day if she were truly castoffable instead of using this sort of replacement part. I’m glad they didn’t go for an entirely replaceable chest though, as that would’ve put a nasty seam right across her front that would’ve been rather unsightly… I’m not sure what the optimum configuration would’ve been, given the limitations of this particular costume.
>>blacklotus
I’m hoping that Mogudan is in the middle of a huge project right now that will destroy us with shock and awe when it’s finally announced. Still checking his site for updates almost daily…
>>Kaji
Yep, Mogudan has been doing cover art for Comic Unreal since its inception in 2006. Hope she gets to you soon!
>>DaFoe
I can confirm that ToysLogic is legit; they’re similar to Kid Nemo in that they use AAAanime as their distributor, and are thus able to offer cheaper prices than many retailers that ship from Japan. The downside is that their releases are delayed by several months as a result. If you don’t mind the wait, either ToysLogic or Kid Nemo is a good choice for kits you can be sure are the real thing.
>>psycore
I’m not sure why, but I’ve gone from a casual fan to a pretty obsessive fanboy of his over the past year or so – probably has something to do with his cover work for Unreal, in hindsight. If you don’t like him that means more loot left over for us poor bosom-addled bastards, so I can’t find it in me to argue the point too strenuously. ^^;;
