Editor’s Desk: vacationing in Goltrock, be back soon (updated)

If you’ve been with HD since mid-’07 you may remember me ranting about Bullet Butlers prior to it coming out last summer. Well, I finally installed it earlier this week (in the process of working on a “2007 eroge year in review” post), and it took me by the scruff of the neck in the way that no game (or novel) has in a very long time, pulled me in, and refused to let me out until I finished. It’s a long game. I finally just got through one of the major story arcs, and am pausing to post this before diving back in – I expect to be finished with the whole thing by the end of the weekend, at which point an exhaustive review will be forthcoming. In the mean time please forgive the lack of updates while I indulge myself a bit longer… a YouTube embed of the Bullet Butlers OP can be found below:

Figure News: Alter’s Kanu (black ver.) preorder open, Kemeko Nendoroid unmasked, Figma TV commercial

A few random figure news items from yesterday, starting with this: the black uniform version of Alter’s Kanu Unchou PVC that we scooped in December is now available for preorder. It’s an exclusive Hobby Japan online shop release, so if you’re looking to score a copy proxying may be the only way to go. Next, the official Goodsmile blog updated with an informal profile of the Kemeko Nendoroid from Kemeko Deluxe that we scooped in the figure fallout from C73. It turns out the freakish chibi Kemeko is actually a “human”-shaped robot in which Em-Em rides; stay tuned for further updates on this and the companion 1/8-scale Em-Em figure from Goodsmile soon. Finally, Max Factory action figure brand Figma aired a commercial last night (viewable here) along with the first episode of ARIA The ORIGINATION that featured their Nagato Yuki in a brief stop-motion animation version of the Haruhi dance. Bishoujo Game News: English visual novel localizer Hirameki closes shop

According to a statement on its official site, as of January 2nd, 2008 visual novel production house Hirameki has closed its doors. I never followed the company’s activities very closely, but this news is certainly a blow to the cause of visual novel fans and bishoujo game fans of all varieties, ero or otherwise. Those familiar with the history of English localization of visual novel-type games will see this as part of a pattern that has brought down every other company solely devoted to their production in the past; only on the margins have such games ever been profitable, and given the current environment it seems unlikely this will change. Still, I can’t help wondering what would happen if the right company came along… Despite the official closure of Hirameki’s doors many of their titles are still available for purchase, including the critically acclaimed Ever17 and Phantom of Inferno. Figure News: Shining Wind’s Elwin, Xecty see fresh PVC incarnations from Kotobukiya, Wave

Shine na Blog brings word today of two new Shining Wind figures in planning. The first is an Elwin / Elwyn (new costume ver.) PVC from Kotobukiya, 1/8 scale with a sculpt from Nakamura Hirotoshi. No news on price or release date is yet available; further information is expected in early spring. The second new figure is from Wave, and features Xecty in a sleeping pose. At 1/8 scale she’s speculated to be part of their DreamTech line, with an original pose based on an illustration from page five of the Shining Wind design works visual collection artbook. The figure’s gimmicks are a) a “soft part” torso extending down to her thighs, b) her one-piece dress is made of “very soft material”, and c) an exchangeable “sleeping face” head part. Some castoffability is implied, though the extent is not known. A color version of this figure is expected to be on display at Wonder Festival 2008 Winter on February 24th; we’ll be keeping an eye out for further information. (no more)

Figure News: Yamato presents Amaori Tatsuki’s Pretty Cat’s Show Time Lesson B PVC from Millimeter Modeling

Yamato updated their official site today with a page for their Story Image Figure EX Pretty Cat’s Show Time Lesson B PVC, based on the Kuramoto Ikuma (Millimeter Modeling) garage kit by the same name, which in turn was based on an illustration in the 2003-released [ERO] Amaori Tatsuki Pretty Cat’s Show Time artbook. Yamato’s version is set for release in April of this year at 7,140 yen retail and 1/6 scale (13.5 cm tall). Original source image below:

December 2007 Eroge Roundup

Better late than never, we close the book on the eroge world of 2007 with a look at major releases through the month of December. It was a banner month in several respects, with new releases from CODEPINK and Littlewitch, the Dies irae debacle, and the recall and subsequent reissue of what many are calling the lolicon title of the year. This post was composed over the course of a few weeks so don’t mind some random changes in verb tense here and there…

Event Report: Comic Market 73, days 2-3

In which is documented a day and night of preparation, followed by a day of circle participation at Comiket 73. Caution: this post should not be read by minors, those desirous of continued employment, offended by bad art, or with any sense of taste whatsoever. If you find the details of this post to be stultifying and the content drab and awful, congratulations – you’re perfectly normal.

Event Report: Comic Market 73, day 1

In which a day in the life of a Comiket attendee is chronicled, including rain, shine, trains, lines (lots of those), loot, and a little bit of cosplay to boot. Also contains commentary on a few of the salient aspects of this event that set it apart from those prior, as well as an appreciation of the folks who gathered to party afterwards. If Comiket is war, I’d say this day’s battle was won!

Figure News: C73 industry hall roundup

Our coverage of Comic Market 73 begins with a look at the figures on display in the industry booth section. While not much new information was gleaned, it was an opportunity to see a few kits up close that we hadn’t been able to experience fully before; see below for photos and the few bits of news forthcoming from the event:

C73 day 3 survived, report coming soon (and happy New Year!)

Congrats to everyone who made it through the day yesterday, and a happy 2008 to all! I’m slowly recovering from the zombified state incurred by 10 hours of sleep in the past 72, but once I’m back on my feet here and can put some things in order it’ll be time to start cooking up some serious reportage. Thanks to all who stopped by to say hi at the table yesterday (risking life and limb to get there no doubt), and may the force be with all of us in subsequent doujin-related endeavors. :3 (no more)
