pavel: I've heard from a friend that there are a few gaijin who have there own circles, although they are rare, and might be slightly unpopular depending on how foreign/imposing you look.

I've read a few toon link/zelda doujins by some mexican guy.

Also: Hello, I'm new here. These details are very helpful as i intend to attempt getting my own circle someday, after i learn some more japanese, and save money.

please check out some of my stuff on my photobucket account if your interested. (sorry for most of it being only sketches.)

don't worry its pretty worksafe.

Hey, Shingo! Perhaps you're aware of this already through industry connections or solicitation of permission, but your website has just possibly received more coverage than a doujin creator ever could have dreamed: you've been given a spotlight in rightstuf's latest newsletter! Here's a verbatim copy of the text, for your aggrandizement pleasure. :)

" *** An Insider's View of the Road to Comiket ***

You've seen it in Comic Party and you've read about it in Genshiken, but what does
it really take to sell your very own manga at Comiket, the world's biggest comic
convention? Shingo at Heisei Democracy has posted an unusual English-language
insider's guide covering everything from the arcane application and appropriate
fees to printing options for your last-minute copy book. (Crazed megalomaniac
partner optional.)"

I think it would be interesting to track the number of hits your website has in the next few weeks as a result of such a dissemination. Will HD explode onto the scene? Will it birth a new stalwart legion of readership? Will HD achieve global supremacy? Will HD be affected at all???

Cheers, and Merry Christmas! :D

I hope you can make it at some point, it's an experience that's really worth having, in my opinion.

Too bad I won't be able to make it this year to Japan. (Already took all my leave this year.)

Hopefully if you're in comiket again next year, I will try to be there. After seeing that photo of the crowd above, there's no event/convention in Singapore to even match half of that scenario. Well, maybe next year's F1 in Singapore. But I rather save that cash for a trip to Japan to see a F1 race. (No motor oil in my blood...)

I'm not sure whether your statement is an optimistic one (affordable Mars tourism in our lifetime!) or a pessimistic one... if it's a goal you have I certainly wouldn't cast it away out of hand, I've found these things are surprisingly possible (with some pretty major priority adjustments along the way...).

Great, I hope to see you there! I'm not sure if my book will really be worth buying, so I may just try to give it to you if you want it (especially if you're down to your last 700 yen... I know the feeling well).

Day 3 ,東K37a.

I'll be sure to remember that - I will probably drop by at that specified time of 2:30-3pm, depending if I can get stuff from my two favourite circles (why the hell does AMR have to be in the 西 halls!?).

I'll definitely buy one of your doujins, even if it were the last 700 yen that I need to get back to Fukushima....well, if I were that desperate I probably wouldn't, I'm sure you would understand :P

Looking forward to meeting you in a couple weeks time! (provided that this cold doesn't kill me first)

I like the "Sasahara is accepted (top),I am accepted (bottom)". I have as much chance of getting behind one of the fabled Comike tables as I have of walking on the surface of Mars, but I am definitely looking forward to reading what transpires!

That's about right, yes. However if you look at the genre breakdown over the three days of the event you'll notice that the overwhelming majority of the male-oriented items (doujin soft, galge-based, male-oriented ero) are clustered on the third day - the ratio of both female attendees and female circles is much less favorable, alas.

I've been having a lot of fun going through the process, but I'm beginning to understand how Sasahara felt at the end of Genshiken 2 ep. 3 when he passed up the opportunity to buy an application packet for the next Comiket.

After having done it once, subsequent applications should be considerably easier, though... I doubt this will be my last (unless I never make it through the sorting process again).

>>Hinano
I don't draw anime (I wish I could ;_;)... here's something I drew two years ago that came out ok, though I think I'm better at faces and figure drawing in general now (though I still pretty much suck by any reasonable standard).

Good luck on your doujin endeavors! I hope that some day the US will be able to hold full-fledged doujin conventions similar to those in Japan.

>>DarkMirage
Difficult to navigate indeed... it would be great to see you, but I wouldn't recommend stopping by until the end of the day if you do feel like it. The aisle should be pretty clear around 2:30 or 3:00. Hope to see you there!

>>DF
Doh! I entirely forgot that Lucky Star had a Comiket episode. I chose to focus on the three series in question because of their direct relationship with doujinshi, but Lucky Star would be a nice addition, agreed. Maybe I'll find a place to stick something in...

>>blacklotus
Glad you enjoyed it! I figure as long as I'm here it's my duty to do what I can to give a feel for the reality behind the anime and manga, so I hope some of that comes through.

>>Nemo_N
Unless you really like filling out forms it's a pretty big pain in the ass, yeah. ^^;; Looking back on it it's not so bad, though, and at least the process is spread out over several months... Hopefully it will be easier the next time around.

Oh yeah, isn't the balance of male/female doujinshi creators 30%/70%?

Next article in Shingo's Comiket series- how to get lucky at Comiket.
