Ever since she was first announced at the tail end of May I’ve been following Toranoana’s maiden voyage into the world of augmented hug pillows with an all-consuming curiosity that is certainly not the mark of a completely sound mind. We tracked her from the introduction of her first color sample through her preorder, to her sale date and shipment, and ultimately to her final destination on my doorstep this evening. Read on for the details of an item that marks a milepost in the development of Japan’s maniac 2D culture!

![Heisei Democracy [ERO] Goods Review: Toranoana's Purichichi](http://heiseidemocracy.com/wp-content/uploads/purichichi01/36s.jpg)
When she arrived this evening and I opened the box I found the pillowcase, nicely packaged, and what upon initial inspection I believed to be an inflatable air matress. I had received an email from Toranoana yesterday indicating that some of the Purichichi mail orders had shipped with incorrect contents in the box, so I leapt to the conclusion that instead of the pillow I’d ordered they had put something else in… thankfully what I thought to be a mattress turned out to be the vacuum-packed pillow with a particularly fancy valve on the plastic bag enclosing it.
Character Description
Shiratori Amane is the main heroine of G.J?’s August 2007 eroge Anata no Shiranai Kangofu. In it you play the role of the first male patient given exclusively to her care as you recover from a mysterious head injury, and gradually develop an attraction to her (romantic, physical, or both) throughout the course of the game. She’s a pretty typical main heroine – pure, honest, hard-working, and generally too nice for her own good. Honestly speaking she’s a pretty boring character, and I found Akira a lot more fun to pursue, but I digress; it’s Amane’s show today.
Design
original Sano Toshihide design
If you’ve been reading HD for awhile you know that I venerate eroge artist Sano Toshihide as a minor god, and the mere thought of one of his designs being rendered in pillow form was enough to do incredibly pleasant things to my physiological state (the details of which will remain absent from this review).
While Amane is perhaps not the character I would’ve chosen first for a pillow incarnation, her design is certainly serviceable and carries all of the trademark qualities of Sano’s artwork that hooked me back on Akibakei Kanojo – the supple curves, amazing proportions and refined, beautiful face are all there. The illustration that serves as the basis of this item will find no complaints from me, though I do have to take issue with the shade of pink chosen for the background; I tend to prefer a more textured bedsheet illustration (preferably white) as the backdrop for pillow artwork, and the pink chosen here goes a bit poorly with Amane’s color scheme.
Lack of a reverse side illustration is understandable given the chest gimmick, but that doesn’t stop me from wishing for one all the same…
Production
Production is decidedly a mixed bag. First up for criticism is the print quality: a look at the original illustration clearly shows that she is outlined in black with a slightly bronzed skin tone, and the printing on the case is definitely more washed out than the original. This is perhaps most evident when placed next to other pillows for comparison.
Next, the chest. It’s hard to know where to begin… first off, the stitching is rather awkward and ugly. In certain lighting it actually looks concave. Secondly, the nubs on the cushions used show through like a second pair of discolored nipples. It seems they used off-the-shelf “breast cushions” to stuff her chest, and the pink nubs look hideous – if Tora had custom made their own with white nubs the problem could’ve been avoided (it can also be avoided by flipping the cushions upside down, thereby losing the protruding nipple effect).
The washed out paint job combined with the pink nubs showing through make it look like her actual nipples are just accidental smears of color on the underside of her breasts – awful. They could’ve fixed this by fully saturating the colors, producing custom cushions with actual breast shape in mind and stitching accordingly, and engineering the nubs to land approximately where the illustrated nipples are – not too tall an order, I’d think, and it’s sad that they didn’t rise to the occasion. The fact that the cushions are easily removable is a silver lining, meaning they could be replaced (or left out for washing). Still, a disappointment.
The most surprising aspect of the production (other than quad phantom nipples) was the uncensored area beneath her panties. Not detailed to any extent, true, but typically even that level of detail warrants some sort of amendment. I’m surprised and pleased that they left it intact.
In a final production note, Amane is a big girl. This is the largest pillow in my collection, and as far as I know 170 cm is the upper limit when it comes to dakimakura; any larger and they would begin to dwarf many of their buyers. I wouldn’t mind another 10 cm on top of that personally, but I doubt many of Tora’s typical clientele (other than the rare giantism fetishist) would prefer much larger.
Conclusion
I’m sad that I can’t report an unqualified success in this first Purichichi installment. The choice of artist and subject matter was perfect, but a few design decisions and some production elements that were mishandled or simply overlooked combine to make this an item with some serious flaws. While I don’t regret the purchase, I hope this isn’t the end of the road in terms of craftsmanship when it comes to the brave new world of cushily-breasted pillows.
This is our second dakimakura review; the first was of Machi Chara’s Ryomou Shimei and Kanu Unchou. If there is anything I can do to improve these reviews, or anything else you’d like to see, I’d be happy to hear your suggestions!
Footnote: Shiratori Amane is not the first chest-enhanced pillow on the market; she has been preceded by others, at the least the Satoshi Urushihara offering that was a Megami Magazine mail-order special a few months ago. She is, however, the first known proper dakimakura to come with contoured breasts attached.

Your review encompasses almost everything I thought about it. Her nipples don’t stay where they should be, and in the case of mine, her right boob just refuses to stay in place, and popped right out of the cup without fail the past two nights.
The illustration underneath the panties was certainly a surprise to me as well. I don’t know how the panties are going to stand up to laundry, so I wish they’re made them removable as well.
I’m having the same problem with the right side of her chest, and the stitching on the panties seems pretty fragile… all in all I’m feeling hesitant to handle here too much lest something break, which is kind of a downer.
I’m thinking of removing the plastic chest plates beneath the breast cushions as it seems they won’t do much but put pressure on the seams… also thinking it might be a good idea to carefully remove the panties altogether, but I’ll probably hold off for a while on that.
Alas, she’s turning into a more frustrating item than I was expecting (or hoping).
Guess I was right and Shiratori’s not bottom censored/mosaic. 8D
Again, thanks for all the photos and a spot-on review.
As a special request, can you provide a photo gallery of Masane Amaha and Linda’s hug pillows too? Especially the Linda one… 8D
Also, is the game bottom censored/mosaic too? If it isn’t too badly mosaic(hug blocks), I’ll definitely buy it. Especially for the meter maid Chitose. 8D

I tried removing the plastic thing last night, made the boob-popping-out even worse since the cups weren’t as packed as before. Frustrating as hell. They should’ve put some velcro to seal or something.
I ordered mine through a proxy service, and it’s just been shipped to me. I’ll be putting up a review of my own on my dakimakura Yahoo! group.
I had many parts already pegged down, the no mosaic on the nether regions, possibly bad stitching on the bust, and slightly faded illustration overall. What really remains is to see how it stands up in a wash.(I’m a bit scared of trying that…)
I am surprised to see that the bust isn’t aligned and fastened into place though. I was expecting them to do that so the nipples wouldn’t slide around, and possibly make washing easier.
Oh well… Good review!

I’d have to reinstall the game to make sure, but if I recall correctly the mosaic is similar to how it appears in the game’s sample CG.
I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find the time to take additional pictures of anything this month, my schedule is looking absolutely insane through the end of the year – if I get around to it I’ll let you know, though.

I pulled the plastic backing out last night and found it to be a much more satisfactory experience (I didn’t feel like I was breaking anything when I held the pillow anymore). The slippage seems to be about the same with or without, for me at least. I hope the stitching in that part holds up.

I didn’t think there would be mosaic, I just thought it would be a bit less articulated than it is. Glad to see Japan can still prove me wrong in that area.
I tend to perpetual optimism when it comes to production quality (even when samples are shown to the contrary), so I was a bit disappointed to see my copy look more or less exactly like what was shown in Akiba Blog preview posts. Hopefully Tora will improve their quality in future pillows.
I added your Yahoo group to the list of “communities” in the HD sidebar yesterday, I hope you don’t mind.
Thanks Shingo. Take your time. Much appreciated if you can. But no regrets if you cannot. You have already provided much to the figure collecting community with your website. 8D
p.s. I just read thru your WHF/Wonderfest posts. (Should have done earlier). Again, I learn much from your first hand experience and insight. Didn’t know about the special 1-day licence needed for amateur hobbyists/sculptors. Now I know the restrictions placed on these extremely talented people. Too bad for the companies. But at least some of the amateur sculptors’ works get picked up by the companies for mass production. Hopefully, they are well compensated for their talent.
Strangely, ever ask why(http://www.tenra.net/keumaya/) never go the mass production way or got picked up by a company? I will definitely like to buy their products. Unfortunately so far, all of them are events only releases. 8(
Hehe, it finally happened. Pink nipple was accidentally ripped off, no idea how it happened. Looks better without it, but still.

It’s great to have more people for my group. I just wish more would talk about them. It’s so quiet.
I’m still waiting for mine to arrive, but I did look at the Toranoana page, and I saw it has special wash instructions. Maybe something to append to your review so others know about it.
The ugly progression of Otakudom. Go back like 3 years for me and this would absolutely make me scoff. Fast forward to now and it’s more like an intrigue. I’m not particularly fond of the character but the idea is certainly an “interesting” one. I do give credit where credit is due, reviewing something like this must be tough. To try to quantify quality of something like this in words seems like a difficult task, one that you did quite well. As long as you don’t do something like add a Fap scale on 1-10 I think we should be fine.

Sorry for the delay in replying here. I’m not sure why Keumaya chooses to go it alone; he’s proven that he has the sculpting talent to release his figures under the auspices of an established company, and as you say it’s frustratingly hard for those of us not at the events to procure the items (nigh impossible in some cases without hitting up Yahoo auctions). I don’t know why he plays the lone ranger (there’s a slim chance that there’s an economic reason for it, but I find that hard to swallow); I do admire his entrepreneurial spirit, though.

I should check out those wash instructions, thanks for the heads up. I’ll add them to the review when I get the chance. Good luck with your group!

You won’t find fap scales here; I try to maintain a fig leaf of respectability when it comes to the discussion of prurient material that I hope separates HD from other sites that might discuss similar topics.
There are a few reasons I’ve chosen to start incorporating reviews of items such as this into the site content here. One reason is simply that these things are out there, and introducing them to the broader international fan community is a service I feel I should provide as long as I’m in a position to do so.
Another reason is more pragmatic; things that make people shake their heads and scoff at the insanity of otaku extremes are often the items that end up most visibly discussed online, which helps attract visitors to the more varied (and often less flashy) content that makes up the rest of the site.
I hope I can continue to tackle subjects such as this in a way that is both honest, marginally intelligent, and not too vulgar, and I also hope that you and other readers will help keep me in check if you ever feel things are getting out of line.
No need to apologise. You have already contributed enough of your precious time and money to help us collectors make informed decisions with your great reviews and insight. Most of us would have given up the idea of such a website for a better career long ago. (Embarrassed to say but I did, after registering http://www.anime.com.sg with a group of like-minded friends for such a purpose as yours…)
One reason Keumaya may want to do it alone may be to control the quality of his products, I think. Imagine an artist’s horror if a company like Epoch/C-works make a pvc figure out of your most precious work of art…SHUDDER…
