At around 5:00 AM yesterday morning the main hard drive in my home computer died. I’m currently trying to get the machine operational again and recover some of the data lost in the crash; I’m not sure how long it will take to reach full operational capacity, but until the home box is restored updates here will be limited to basic news for the most part.
On a happier note, the unceasing endeavors of jetfuel have helped HD transition to Wordpress 2.3 largely unscathed (though a few plugins haven’t quite caught up to the tag-based revolution yet); we’ve also implemented a couple of nifty new site features that you may have noticed over the past few days, including the “Newsbits” bar above the main post column, for random odds and ends; a group of Reviews buttons with handy links to reviews by subject; and a Figure Release Schedule page with information that may be of use. We’ll try our hardest to work through this technical setback with minimal impact to the site. (no more)
I feel your pain Shingo. I lost 250GB of data a couple of weeks ago and everyone is asking $400-3000 to recover it!
Ouch. Sorry to hear Shingo. Hope you can recover some of that data dude!
A word of caution: don’t be too quick to start using the tags in WP 2.3. The implementation is really terrible (the category to tag conversion tool breaks your categories, there is no tag management interface, etc.), and while some plugins exist to help make up for the glaring omission (Simple Tags is the best I’ve seen so far), there are other kinks in the system that need to be worked out.
Hope you can recover most, if not all, of your data. The death of a hard drive is never a fun thing.
Ouch…good luck man…time to order some stuff from Play_Asia to help out…
Just thinking of all the Ohno material lost brings a single manly tear to my eye. Godspeed, Shingo.

Data recovery services are hideously expensive, aren’t they. :/ I don’t think anything on the drive was worth that much to recover, but it’s a lot of lost productivity that I’m hoping to reclaim at least some of.
>>moyism
Thanks! It includes a lot of media files tagged with your name, oddly enough…
>>shinsengumi
We sort of stumbled backwards into the hornet’s nest that is tags, alas. Most vital site functions have been successfully converted, but I agree, there’s still A LOT to be desired in the 2.3 implementation. Hopefully some of the more thorny issues will be addressed in the next upgrade.

Thanks! If you do feel like ordering a figure for some reason, Play Asia is certainly a great place to do it, in my humble estimation.

Thank you sir. It’s only a few short hours until Ohno reappears in animated form, so I’m hoping I can hold out until then…
I feel sorry for you Shingo, a hard drive crash is always damn bad :(
About WP update … I wonder when I’ll update my blog. I suppose I’ll wait till WP2.4, this new version gives lots of trouble to already WP users.
Hard disk crash is ouch. Though I’ve had the fortune of never experiencing one, I know the pain of losing data. Good luck on the recovery.
Hah……thanx to your figure release schedule- I now owe my soul to Play-Asia.
Jeepers……
Augh. @.@
Last time I had a hard drive crash, it was total, and it cost over a grand to get fixed. (This was right before I was about to send off a bunch of work off to a client, too. >.<)
Good luck, man!
Fight on, Shingo! We back you!
I fervently hope that soon your stocks of Ohno material will again burst at the seams.
Shingo, well that’s odd… I would assume it’s RAWS otherwise O_O
BTW, if by some miracle you can at least boot or get the BIOS to pick up the drive, I would suggest the following apps: spinrite (helps recovery/fix messed up HD sectors), checkdisk for NTFS (oldie but still works every once in awhile), and Captain Nemo (only if your comp/OS picks up the drive, it can recover some data through non-OS ways). Once again, good luck!

Updating at 2.4 might be a wise idea, I hear it’s going to be primarily focused on the GUI so hopefully it will be more user friendly than 2.3.
>>DJnerate
Thanks! Things are going alright, but getting everything back up to full steam is going to take awhile…
>>Work_Ethic
Doh! I know the feeling, only for me it’s Amiami and Hobby Stock. I hope Play Asia are kinder masters.

Damn, that’s a horror story. I hope I’m never in such a situation, though I’m not sure I’ve properly learned my lesson from this crash. I really need to get a good system of backups in place…
>>lostdog
After watching Genshiken 2 ep. 1 I’m pretty well fulfilled, I have to say. :3
>>moyism
Raws indeed! I really appreciate your putting them up.
Work on data recovery is proceeding thanks to an app called “GetDataBack”, which seems to be working pretty well. Most of the important stuff seems to be salvageable, but reinstalling all the pertinent software and drivers on a fresh Windows install is going to be hell… I hope I can get a replacement drive soon.
Back ups are vital. I always back up my documents now… can’t afford to lose work (and thus, a good chunk of cash) anymore. @.@
I don’t have a system, I just use a DVD-R for mine. (Granted, losing my art and such would suck… but losing work for a client sucks more.)
I should mention that the drive crash happened just before I had to help run Katsucon that year, too. XD
