Many HD readers are no doubt familiar with the extreme curves of Kotoyoshi Yumisuke’s manga penmanship, whether it be from his work on the Cool Devices eroanime of the mid nineties or the masterful job done by Icarus Publishing in bringing some of his more recent eromanga to an English readership. Today we take a look at perhaps his most visible volume of eromanga to date (due to its recent Icarus release), Juicy Fruits. Fans of the small-chested, beware… 18+ ONLY, NWS.

Kotoyoshi Yumisuke is an eromangaka legend and one of the most veteran hands still in the business, with a professional resume that stretches back to script / storyboard / character design duty on episode 4 of Cool Devices in 1995, art duty on the Saber Marionette J manga in 1996, though a string of eromanga in recent years including Shokuynuu 1 and 2, Midara, Juicy Fruits, and Glamorous Roses. His most recent (completed?) project is an all-ages manga called Naegayuru from Young King Comics, and he is now working on a manga called Leona EXPLOSION, also for Young King. He has been active on the doujin scene since 1989 (!!), producing books regularly at the rate of two or three a year until his most recent release in the winter of 2005. Outside his manga work he has provided designs for two [ERO] figures, Milk Tank Teacher Nene from maker Q-six and the upcoming cow girl Sanae from Daiki Kougyou.

Kotoyoshi’s style is defined by an aggressive use of line width to depict volume, preferring to weight his curves heavily and let their tapering vectors do the talking over the use of a lot of hatching or interior definition of surfaces. In this respect his style is simpler and less busy than many of his counterparts, and among artists with similar styles his is one of the more abstract. There are those (myself included) who don’t always care for some of the contours on his characters because of this level of cartoonish stylization, but when he surrenders to gravity at an acceptable fraction of the Earth’s things tend to settle very nicely indeed.

On to the actual manga! Unlike some of his other recent work (Midara, Shokunyuu 1 and 2) Juicy Fruits is not tied to a single story, but rather is a loose collection spanning a wide variety of characters and themes. The stories retain a generally upbeat vibe throughout, with little hard coercion in evidence, and the writing is entertaining enough – the scenarios provide effective (if whimsical, improbable, or absurd) vehicles for the sex that invariably occurs in each.

The highlights of the book for me story-wise are the first chapter (a jealous sister seduces her brother at a flower-viewing party), the fifth chapter (a school baseball pitcher comes on to the club manager, only to find at the end that she’s been with the whole team), the 6th chapter (an older sister pretends to pass out after drinking and lets her brother have his way with her), and the 8th chapter (a nerdy sister gives herself a makeover and her brother comes on to her thinking she’s someone else). A good deal of incest going on here, certainly a deal breaker for some.

If none of the themes here are a turnoff and you don’t mind some of the more cartoonish aspects of Kotoyoshi’s style, this is a book I can easily recommend to eromanga fans across a pretty broad spectrum of preferences (though the undeveloped imouto fans are quite definitely left unserved). For those who haven’t picked this up yet it’s also a great chance to support the infant English language industry through a purchase of the Icarus version – even if this style isn’t your absolute favorite, a vote with your dollar here means more great uncensored English manga in the future!

Postscript: Kotoyoshi’s most recent diary entry answers the question regarding his intent to return to producing adult-oriented material: in short, he doesn’t know if or when it’s going to happen. He’s currently focusing all of his productive ability on Leona EXPLOSION, and as long as it’s running (most likely through 2007 at the least) he doesn’t have the capacity to work on anything else. As much as I’d like to see all of his work succeed, I almost hope Leona becomes an enormous flop and his publisher cuts him free, allowing him to return to more prurient pursuits…
