Comic Market (official site) is the world’s largest amateur comics (“doujinshi”) convention, occurring twice a year in mid-August and late December. It attracts over 450,000 attendees during its three days as well as over 10,000 artist groups (“circles”). It is known as the birthplace of cosplay, and thousands of cosplayers attend the event as well. It is primarily a sales event for doujinshi, although various anime, game and hobby-related industry groups have a presence as well. This year’s summer Comiket is the event’s 72nd iteration, and will take place from August 17th through the 19th.

Wonder Festival (official site) is Japan’s premiere garage kit (amateur homebrew unpainted / unassembled plastic resin model) and figure convention. Tens of thousands of visitors attend to view the newest figures from major manufacturers, purchase special limited edition items, find great buys at second-hand dealer booths and buy garage kits via the event’s one-day limited license system. Many cosplayers attend as well, as unlike Comiket they are allowed to bring props such as replica guns and swords. Wonder Festival 2007 Summer will occur on August 12th.
