Game info site eg presents news today that Akiyama Koubou, the company that brought the 1:1 scale Gundam bust to the Bandai Museum in addition to other feats of modern art, architecture and design, has produced a fully painted 209 centimeter tall EVA unit 1 figure that will be available for purchase at a price of 985,000 yen starting in mid-February. They’ve scheduled an initial run of 20, which one might deem optimistic if one were not acquainted with the habits of rabid Evangelion otaku. Check out eg’s coverage for some great shots of the figure in production. As an added point of interest, Akiyama Koubou’s official Eva site mentions that they have a 1:1 scale Rei figure currently in development as well… (no more)
As for the 1:1 Rei, I think they’re selling them: http://www.evastore.jp/index.cgi?rm=detail&id=900&genre=&page=&key=&8%A1%E04=2%A1%DE0
Then again, I don’t know Japanese, so maybe this is just a pre-order.

That’s a different 1:1 Rei, actually – it’s the one from Paper Moon. I guess she’s just that popular…
Pretty expensive hat rack!
God this is stupid. It’s like those 1/1 scale World of Warcraft statues but those are far cheaper. I mean, Eva01 is butt ugly.

I’m frightened that I sort of see the appeal in this, actually. If I were filthy rich and had a house with an atrium or a gazebo or a vomitory or something where it could be displayed as a conversation piece, I’d be tempted.
I am genuinely stumped as to who would purchase this, considering the Evangelion merchandise already on the market. The only use for such a device would be to shove it up a Gainax marketing executive’s arse.
What’s next, a ‘life-size’ EVA 01 in 2009?
Oh, and okaerinasai, Shingo-kun. Hishashiburi. Genki desu-ka?
So this is completely unrelated and totally tangential, but I received my hanko the other day and if you face it the right way, it reads HD. Which is pretty downright cool.
