I have never seen this LoGH,you see, and have no memories of it. I am definitely not interested seeing it now though, no matter how good it is - using words like 'defile' to sneer at a show I am thoroughly enjoying (when you haven't even watched more than one episode!) really puts me off checking out the museum piece. I'm contrary like that. ^-^

I come at Garakan fresh without preconception of what it 'should be'. Let it stand as a show in it's own right.

Another complaint I am desperately bored of is 'the animation is ugly'. Pft, people watch 'One Piece' don't they? That's the ugliest thing I ever saw! The animation isn't great to be honest, but the story has hooked me enough that frankly, I don't care.

The plot is one of those simple/complicated things - basic framework, many tangled subplots, and many questions left unanswered that give my imagination room to manouver. I think that's important with a show; that it creates something in your mind outside of the show itself; that you ponder aspects of it, that it has potential (Noein was a show like this).

(Unlike shows like 'Haruhi'; that was really amusing, but it ended when the closing titles finished and I haven't thought about it since and can't even remember who the characters were).

I love how Garakan throws caution and physics to the wind and just goes for (sometimes near comic) melodrama. However, it's *played* absolutely straight, as good melodrama always should be.

I love the characters and I love their crazy designs (the designs are a pure matter of taste). It's got a big cast and their relationships are complicated, interesting, often ambiguous and sometimes hilarious. (Vetti, especially, is one intriguing monster and in later episodes, the show has veered off into some darker territory with him).

I have given some idea of why I like the show, (and as well as the above reasons, there is a pure 'je ne sais quois' factor, just *something* about it that makes me care when frankly I've stopped watching about everything else I started at the beginning of the Spring season). However, in the end, I think I don't really need to justify why I love it. I simply do.

If you can present a compelling case that Garakan is worth watching beyond the first episode I will certainly go back and give it another shot. The memory of the awesomeness that are LoGH and the Seikai series won't allow me to defile them by placing Garakan in their ranks without some pretty massive justification, though.

O_O I kinda liked the site until I read your opinion of Garakan; we disagree so fundamentally there's no point in me sticking around. :(

[...] right now i’m trying to download all 14 episodes of ‘the melancholy of suzumiya haruhi’, which is being widely reported as the best thing to come out of the new anime season in japan, which started a couple months ago and featured nearly 60 new shows, i believe. i’ve been reading secondhand information from heisei democracy about so many new shows i can’t keep track of which ones i want to download and watch. i checked out the opening credits for haruhi on youtube, and that was enough to hook me, coupled with the universally positive reviews, and the apparent pop-cultural explosion in japan right now that is haruhi-ism.
thanks for the round-up. man, what a disapointment. even with all those goegeous chara designs, it seems the writers are sucking now.

Air Gear - I'll obviously check it out for the hot babes.

Simoun - those screenshots are hilarious since it seems like kissing is their handshakes. but i LOVE the cute chara designs.

Disgaea - WOW, I am shocked that it was bad. I loved the game and to hear that the anime sucks is terrible news. who knew they could fuck this up?

Joshikousei - eh, nothing like impossibly short skirts in the real world to show off. the designs look hysterical but i guess i'll check it out for the panty-ness. ^^

>>Chikushou
I agree regarding Yoshinaga-san Uchi no Gargoyle; my review here was based on the letdown I felt after building up a bit more anticipation than the series may wind up being worth. I'll give it a few more episodes to redeem itself; here's hoping.

>>Lk_LoA
Yep, Itou Noiji is the designer behind both Shana and Suzumiya. She's in the midst of a mini-boom right now, it seems...

>>ayaseine
I was hoping the anime would serve as a good introduction to the property, but I don't think I'll be able to give it the benefit of the doubt for long enough to tell. ;_;

I'm glad to hear you got something out of this, and that my warped sense of taste is at least partially shared. I look forward to reading part II as well; now to get down to the "writing it" business...

I like it when someone blogs an entire wrap-up of the season's new shows, just as you have. It gives me an idea of what's coming out, what it looks like (screenshots), and what I should check out myself. Impressions obviously vary from person to person, but so far, your feelings about this first group of shows is very similar to my own.

Looking forward to reading part II soon.

I did not expect that the Disgaea anime would be animated really poorly..

Although most anime based on games do have a tendency to be poorly animated/poorly done, such as Star Ocean, et al. Disgaea might've been better off as an OVA or something.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuu-utsu
Same character designer as Shana? Similar style.

Yoshinaga-san Uchi no Gargoyle
Nooooooooo...
Chiwa can not be in a bad anime. -_-

Garkun wasn't what I was hoping for either, but I think you might be a little too harsh. I do agree that melodrama this early is a bad sign. There's so much potential for hilarity with Chiwa Saito's character and Wakamoto playing a frigging gargoyle that can't move, but it seems like they might be wasting that potential. Because of the cast, I'm going to give it a few more episodes.

I was thinking of doing something like this, but since you're also trying out every show in existence and actually are up to writing about it, I'll leave it to you.

Nice roundup so far.
