I started playing Alice Soft’s “Rance VI” yesterday evening. The feel of the game is pretty similar to Rune Soldier Louie except with sex. You play “Rance,” whose motto is “All the women in the world are my playthings! Gya hahahaha!” Unlike Louie, Rance is actually able to lend this statement some truth.

At the beginning of the game you have one companion, your faithful sidekick and slave girl Sheel, conspicuous for her pink afro and vague disapproval of your surprise-sexing ways. You are separated from her immediately after the prologue ends, when you travel to a foreign capital city after completing a rather disappointing mini-quest (you thought you were looking for a hot maid chick but it was really a guy – or a guy’s corpse, rather). When you report after completing the quest you are mistaken for Shell’s slave, knocked out, and when you come to you’re in the gladiator pits.

It turns out that, surprise, the country you’ve wound up in is in bad shape, with a corrupt ruler. You’re about to go crazy down in the pits surrounded by only men (and monsters, most of which you can dispatch easily), when a new face appears – a member of “The Resistance” who offers to show you the way out of the pits if you’ll agree to join their movement. You don’t really give a shit about the country, but he tells you that “The Resistance” is full of hot women – and besides, he’s the only one who knows the way out of the dungeon.

You make your way out of the dungeon and through the forest to The Resistance hideout, a little village deep in the wilderness. You meet a few hot women right off the bat, and then are taken to meet the leader of the group, and that’s where I stopped for the night.

There has only been one sex scene so far, but that’s not a big deal; the game is turning out to be pretty fun without every other mouse-click leading to porn. Apparently the Rance series has been around since 1989, and they’ve found a schtick that works. My only major complaint thus far is that you can only gain levels, unequip items, save, and heal for free at “home points,” which are few and far between (there has only been one so far in the game). I had to leave it last night in the middle of a scene in the hope that my computer won’t crash before I get home tonight and find the next place I can save.

In other news, the second installment of Re: Cutie Honey was awesome, and should be required viewing material for all citizens of the free world. Also, Marimite 10 can continue through the last three episodes of the season as far as I’m concerned.
